Job summary

Sherwood Ward is a male acute mental health admissions ward supporting people from the West Area locality. Our purposebuilt 13bed ward offers a safe, calm environment where adults experiencing mental health difficulties can receive assessment, treatment, and compassionate care.

We work closely with our neighbouring wards, creating a supportive network that helps us provide consistent, highquality care.

Our team includes nurses, mental health practitioners, healthcare support workers, doctors, consultant psychiatrists, occupational therapists, and psychologists. Every member of our team plays a part in helping patients feel understood, supported, and empowered in their recovery.

We also enjoy welcoming newly qualified nurses and student nurses. Many choose to stay with us after qualifying because of the supportive, friendly atmosphere we work hard to maintain.

Main duties of the job

To lead the clinical management of a designated group of service users in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care.

To ensure that junior staff and students are actively engaged in patient activity.

To observe, report and record changes in the service user physical, mental health and behaviour.

To work with the MDT in planning and delivering care.

To understand the range of interventions available, the evidence base and potential outcomes for service users.

To record all contacts with service users in case notes in line with Southern Health NHS FT record keeping policy.

To ensure effective communication with clients, relatives, carers, visitors, staff, and others.

To ensure that all communication is within the boundaries of client confidentiality and to seek guidance when unsure.

To communicate effectively with service users and their relatives/carers, acknowledging barriers to understanding.

To communicate effectively within the MDT.

    About us

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust provides joined-up mental and physical healthcare for around two million people across our communities. With over 13,000 staff working in the community and local hospitals, we deliver care at every stage of life, helping people live their best and healthiest lives.

Our mental health services include community-based support and early intervention in psychosis (EIP) for both adults and young people, alongside a network of specialist inpatient wards covering forensic, learning disability, eating disorder and older person's care.

We deliver extensive physical health services too, from urgent community response teams helping frail and older patients remain safely at home, to hospitals at home teams providing acute-level care in familiar surroundings. Our neurological services offer rehabilitation and treatment for conditions including Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, Motor Neurone Disease, Head Injury, Cerebral Palsy and Stroke. Across Hampshire, our community hospitals provide inpatient rehabilitation as a step down from acute care, and our dedicated teams also staff Treetops Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Portsmouth, offering expert, compassionate support.

Everything we do is underpinned by our CARE values of compassion, accountability, respect and excellence
