Main duties of the job
As a key member of a multi-disciplinary team, the Physiotherapy Technician supports high-quality, person-centred care for adults with learning disabilities whose physical health needs are not met by mainstream services. Under the supervision of registered physiotherapists, they contribute to service users' health and wellbeing through therapeutic interventions and advocacy.
The technician independently delivers physiotherapy within scope of practice, including mobility assessments, falls prevention, equipment provision and monitoring, aquatic therapy, and gym-based programmes. They manage a designated caseload, supporting treatment planning, documentation, and discharge.
They work collaboratively with service users, families, carers, and external agencies to implement tailored therapeutic programmes that promote health within a social care model. They facilitate access to treatment settings and community activities such as leisure centres and health promotion groups.
Practice is supported by obtaining informed consent in line with the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and using communication strategies suited to adults with learning disabilities. They build therapeutic relationships based on trust and provide accessible information.
The technician assists the Lead Physiotherapist and Team Manager in service development, clinical audits, waiting list management, admin tasks, student education, carer support, external liaison, and referral processes.
