Trainee Cognitive Behavioural Therapist

The closing date is 29 June 2025

Job summary

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Mental Health Professional to join the Portsmouth and South East Hampshire (PSEH) Psychological Services and train as a BABCP accredited CBT Practitioner. This is a fixed term post with a view to applying for a Band 7 CBT Practitioner post on completion.

The post is based in dynamic Community Mental Health Teams of either Gosport and Fareham or Havant and Petersfield, working with adults aged 18 years plus with complex, severe and enduring mental health problems. The principles and philosophy of care are based on the recovery model and we work closely with other CMHT team members as well as inpatient and crisis services.

The successful candidate will join a supportive team of clinicians, committed to developing high quality care. PSEH Psychological Services is compromised of 30 psychological professionals with expertise in CBT, DBT, CAT, ACT and EMDR. We have good supervision structures and an excellent track record of CPD, as well as good links with Southampton University, particularly with the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology and the Post Graduate Cognitive Behavioural Therapy programme. Our service values reflective practice and supports CPD through in house and external training opportunities.

Main duties of the job

This is a training role within the Trust's secondary care services established as part of the national Improving Access to Psychological Therapies SMI Programme (SMH). The post-holder will work within the psychological therapy service, providing CBT interventions whilst undertaking a programme of training for this role.

This intensive training post will equip the post holder to provide a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) service to patients with a range of complex problems for which CBT is demonstrated to be clinically effective. The post holder will work in the service for at least 3 days of the week using the newly developed skills whilst attending the training programme for the other day (1 day a week university programme).

This role will involve working within an established psychological therapy service. The primary purpose of the role will be to support the delivery of interventions for people diagnosed with enduring mental health needs and complex emotional needs. This will include working both individually and in groups, under appropriate clinical supervision.

The post holder will place an emphasis on co-production and demonstrate an attitude which respects and values individuals' and their carers and the core values of the Trust: patients and people first; partnership; and respect.
