Job summary

Applications are invited for a Band 8a Applied Psychologist, this post would also suit a newly qualified psychologist looking to develop into an 8a role via a preceptorship. The role will involve a combination of direct clinical work, team working and service development. You will undertake specialist psychological assessment, formulation & evidence based interventions (both individually and in group) with people experiencing a range of complex mental health issues. The post is based at Horsefair Mews in Romsey, though also involves working across other bases across the South West Hampshire Division.

The South West Hampshire Division covers New Milton, Totton, Eastleigh, Romsey, and Eastleigh Southern Parishes. Flexible working and some working from home will also be considered according to clinical need.

Previous experience of working in adult mental health teams in the NHS is required. Excellent communication skills are vital, together with the ability to provide psychological consultation, training & supervision. Knowledge & skills in providing psychological therapies with people who present with severe and enduring mental health difficulties, including psychosis and/or personality disorder, are also essential.

Main duties of the job

You will be joining the South West Hampshire Psychological Therapies Team. We are a friendly & supportive team of clinicians, who pride ourselves on delivering high quality care & promoting recovery. You will receive regular supervision from a senior psychologist, as well as having opportunities for peer supervision. Continuing professional development is actively supported, with opportunities for further training and all staff encouraged to be accredited within at least one therapeutic modality. Within the service, we offer a range of interventions, including: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), family interventions. Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) & Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who is trained in or would be interested in training in CAT.

We have strong links with the University of Southampton, particularly with the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology, the MSc/Diploma in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy for Severe Mental Health Problems & training courses for IAPT.

  • Doctoral level training in applied psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996), including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS.
  • Registered with the Health Care Professions Council as a Practitioner Psychologist.

  • Accreditation as a therapist with BABCP, SfDBT, ACAT or similar body.
