Job summary

Treetops SARC provides support, advice, and forensic medical examination services for people of all ages who have experienced rape or sexual assault throughout Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. From 01 April 2025 the service will be based in a new, purpose designed and refurbished building in Fareham, Hampshire. Open 24/7, 365 days a year; staffed by on-call crisis workers and sexual offence examiners out of hours.

Sexual offences are devastating crimes; the impact of sexual violence can include significant consequences to the long-term health and well-being of patients. In the aftermath of an assault all patients, regardless of age or gender, should have access to a timely, high-quality forensic medical examination:

- to address their concerns

- minimise trauma

- aid & support their recovery

Treetops provides dedicated services for the health and well-being of patients, including forensic medical examination. This provides the police and the patient with the best possible opportunity to recover evidence for use within an investigation, if the patient so chooses, and minimises the risk of a miscarriage of justice.

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be required to exclude any individual with a history of criminal behaviour, which could be considered unacceptable. In addition to a DBS, Hampshire Police vetting for Non-Police Personnel will be required. Please note for the vetting required to work in our service the postholder must have lived in the UK for at least three years.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a medical doctor who shall be able to practice as an autonomous practitioner exercising independent and objective clinical judgement within professional guidelines and code of conduct.

Attend the SARC base, the Treetops Centre, and on occasion other locations, within 90 minutes of being called out, unless an appointment has been arranged

The post holder must work together with and liaise with the Crisis Worker and Sexual Offence Interview Trained (SOIT) Police Officer to support the complainant.

The examinations will usually be undertaken at the SARC, but may, in an emergency, be conducted elsewhere.

The post holder must be available for court attendance when requested as a professional witness.

The main responsibilities of the post holder will be to undertake forensic medical examinations of complainants of rape and sexual assault in accordance with current guidelines including: providing telephone information and support for police, crisis workers; undertaking forensic medical examinations where appropriate for police and non-police referrals; use of a colposcope to support the examination and enable photo documentation; documentation of injuries using body maps; taking of forensic samples and providing medical care inclusive of sexual health assessment, pregnancy risk assessment, blood borne virus risk assessment, mental health and suicide risk assessment and safeguarding.

Qualifications

Essential

  • * Medical qualification, on the GMC register with a full licence to practice.
  • * Minimum 3 years post graduate experience in a relevant specialism (such as Gynaecology, Genito-Urinary and/or Reproductive & Sexual Health, General Practice)
  • * Experience & competency in gynaecological examination, including speculum and proctoscope examination
  • * Knowledge of and compliance with child and vulnerable adult safeguarding procedures
  • * Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills
  • * ILS
  • * Medical Indemnity Insurance
  • * Knowledge of local medical services

Desirable

  • * Experience in Paediatric Medicine, Paediatric Gynaecology, Accident & Emergency and/or Psychiatry
  • * Knowledge and understanding of SARC service
  • * Experience in the clinical & forensic management of those who have been sexually assaulted, in both adults and children.
  • * Membership of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine (MFFLM) or
