Job summary

Antelope House is our acute mental health inpatient and psychiatric intensive care unit in Southampton. Antelope house offers high quality, recovery focused care to adult with a range of mental health needs. We have; 2 acute wards, Trinity and Saxon, and 2 Psychiatric intensive care units, Hamtun and Abbey Ward. Hamtun Ward is a 10 bedded male psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU).

We are looking for forward thinking individuals with great communication skills, who are highly motivated to empower others and willing to work with a strong team ethos to work within Antelope house and based on Hamtun (male PICU).

Hamtun Ward aims to provide individualised care to each service user during a time of acute mental health crisis and we aim to work in a collaborative way with them and their families and carers in a recovery focused way until a time where they can be supported to maintain their mental and physical wellbeing within the community.

Service users are at the centre of everything we do. You will become part of a team that offers a safe environment to all service users that will encourage individuality and promote anti discriminatory practices with residents with regards to gender, sexuality, age, religion, disability and cultural diversity.

Main duties of the job

As a Healthcare Support Worker you will provide physical and psychological care to service users in accordance with the specified plan of clinical care. You will carry out

duties as designated by the person in charge and accurately record patient/service user information. In addition to this, you will provide support to relatives/carers.

Job description

Job responsibilities

-Work under the direction and supervision of qualified staff.

-To observe, report and record changes in the service user's physical health, mental health and behaviour.

-To provide care as planned in the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings.

-To be aware of, and work to, the principles of the Mental Health Act (MHA).

-To give and receive clear messages by telephone and or personal contact.

-To provide the necessary physical care to service users to help them complete daily living activities, i.e., personal hygiene, diet and fluid intake, clothing and laundry, personal environment, elimination, maintaining rest and sleep and activity, physical observations.

-To act in a manner to respect the customs, individuality, values, sexuality and spiritual beliefs, activity, and supporting the individual to fulfil these.

-To provide social activities, emotional support and stability to service users to ensure effective engagement whilst maintaining professional boundaries.

-To contribute in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluating care.

-To create and maintain professional supportive relationships with all members of staff, with other professionals and agencies to enhance recovery.

-To provide escort duties to the service user under the direction of the nurse in charge.

-To carry out observations as per the individual care plans and service user needs, in line with Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust Policy.

-To participate in and co-facilitate therapeutic and social engagement group work.

-To undertake prescribed physical observations as follows; blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, blood sugars, urinalysis, weight and height and report results to the nurse in charge.
