Job summary

BAND 7 CLINICAL/COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGIST PRECEPTORSHIP OPPORTUNITY OR BAND 8a.

We are recruiting for a Clinical/Counselling Psychologist to be based at Waterford House, New Milton, including some working across bases. This role is a combination of direct clinical work, team working and service development. You will undertake specialist psychological assessment, formulation and evidence-based interventions with people experiencing a range of complex mental health issues.

We have strong links with the CMHTs which supports more integration of psychological knowledge into the care provided. We work closely as a psychology team, and are keen to share ideas and to continually develop the service to ensure we are offering the highest quality of care.

The post could be appointed either as a band 7 preceptorship towards an 8a role or be appointed at 8a. Responsibilities would be adjusted accordingly. We are able to put a development plan in place to support applicants wishing to be considered for a preceptorship.

This post would be suitable for someone about to qualify as an Applied Psychologist and registering with the HCPC.

Main duties of the job

The postholder is a member of the multi-professional team. They will be required to work as an autonomous, independent practitioner responsible for their own work and interventions and for the interpretation of agreed guidelines and policies in providing a highly specialist Psychological service to individuals referred to the Community Mental Health Team (CMHT). This may include working with families/ carers or other identified person where appropriate. Individuals will primarily present with complex psychological problems that would benefit from the services of the CMHT team.

They will undertake complex assessments, offer consultancy and provide expert advice to colleagues.

They will provide specialist treatment for complex cases and plan and prioritise their own clinical workload.

They will be expected to comment and propose change to policy or service development within the divisional psychological service and team as necessary.

They will provide specialist supervision for trainee psychologists, qualified psychologists and psychological therapists and provide psychological guidance and supervision for multi-professional clinical colleagues.

They will engage in research and development, cultivate and encourage a research ethos within the wider clinical team.

They will place an emphasis on co-production and demonstrate an attitude which respects and values clients' and their carers and the core values of the trust: clients and people first; partnership; and respect.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Doctoral level training in psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS.
  • Registered with the Health Care Professions Council as a Psychologist

Desirable

  • Training and qualifications in CBT, family work, research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and inpatient settings.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course, presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity, including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • Demonstrate further specialist training/experience through having received a minimum of 50 hours clinical supervision of working as a psychologist over a minimum of 18 months, or an alternative agreed by the Head of Psychology.
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS.
  • Formal training in supervision of other psychologists, or equivalent experience.
  • 50 hours supervision in a specific modality case presentations, group supervision supported by short courses approved by the Psychology head of Service and assessed at interview.
