Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced applied psychologist to take the Clinical Lead role and be responsible for implementing and maintaining the NHS and HMPPS Psychologically Informed Planned Environment (PIPE) model, which forms part of a pathway of services within the Offender Personality Disorder Strategy. This is a new PIPE service which has been implemented and is in ongoing development at Dickson House Approved Premises for men in Fareham which provides 19 beds, taking men on licence upon release from custody from the Hampshire area and nationally.

Psychologically Informed Planned Environments (PIPEs) are specifically designed, contained environments where staff members have additional training to develop an increased psychological understanding of their work and work in a psychologically informed way. This understanding enables the provision of an enhanced safe and supportive environment, which can facilitate the development of those who live and work there. They are designed to have a particular focus on the environment in which they operate; actively recognising the importance and quality of relationships and interactions.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will have a key role in creating and maintaining a healthy psychosocial environment; ensuring that the unit adheres to the theoretical principles of the PIPE model. This will include design, delivery and oversight of the core components of the PIPE model, including group work and the management of group dynamics. They will ensure that the delivery of psychosocial aspects of the PIPE service is compliant with policy and delivery arrangements. Working in collaboration with the PIPE Operational Lead / Approved Premises manager, the postholder will be responsible for supporting the probation service staff in implementing all aspects of PIPE service delivery and will ensure high quality project updates and performance data is available to service commissioners according to established protocols. The postholder will also need to liaise effectively with senior probation officers who hold operational responsibility for this important area of National Probation Service delivery.

  • Postgraduate level training in Applied/Clinical Psychology, including models of psychopathology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS.
