Job summary
We are looking to recruit an individual that has lived experience of mental health difficulties within the antenatal/postnatal period as a Perinatal Peer Support Worker (PSW).
Are you passionate about perinatal mental health services? If so, we are currently looking for enthusiastic, forward thinking and self-motivated individual to join our multidisciplinary team in providing high-quality, person-centred support to women/birthing people accessing care under the Perinatal mental health service.
Peer Support Workers are people with previous experience of using mental health services who are employed, trained and supported to use these experiences to support others. At the heart of the role is the building of safe, trusting relationships based on the sharing of lived experience. The focus of the peer worker role is on enabling individuals to discover and make use of their strengths, and to build and strengthen connections to their peers and wider communities.
Main duties of the job
The role of Perinatal PSW has been developed specifically for people who have lived experience of mental distress in the perinatal period. Through sharing wisdom from their own experiences, peer support workers will inspire hope and belief that recovery is possible in others. They will work in support of the Southern Health NHS FT Strategy "To create independence, choice and recovery of a life beyond mental illness, in a safe, hopeful and timely way, in partnership and collaboration with people who use our services."
As an integral and highly valued member of the multi-disciplinary team, the PSW will provide formalised peer support and practical assistance to service users in order for them to regain control over their own lives and unique recovery process. Within a relationship of mutuality and information sharing they will promote choice, self-determination and opportunities for the fulfilment of socially valued roles and connection to local communities.
Reporting directly to Perinatal Team Manager and under the professional supervision of the Head of Peer Support, the Peer Support Worker will be responsible for the delivery of peer support interventions as agreed.
