Job summary

This is a new post established to continue the development of Orthogeriatric and Elderly Care services at Southport.

You will be joining a skilled and motivated Elderly Care department based at Southport Hospital with a commitment to provide a truly integrated high quality service to our frail elderly population.

As part of the role, the post holder will be required to participate in the education supervision and training of trainees in Orthopaedics and Medicine.

The successful post holder will take on the role of Clinical Lead for the medical care of older Orthopaedic and Trauma patients.

The post is based primarily at Southport District General Hospital but also includes sessions in Ormskirk District General Hospital. Outpatient clinics will be delivered across both sites.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will;

  • Have responsibility for supporting the National Guidance for Hip Fracture patients, enabling the Trust to comply with the requirements of the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) and the 2011 NICE Guideline for Fractured Neck of Femur.
  • Provide expert medical intervention for the complex needs of older trauma and elective patients and take forward the National Standards in relation to falls and bone health.
  • Provide direct input to patients admitted under the Neck of Femur Fracture Pathway reviewing any medical issues, and assessment of falls and bone health.
  • Undertake ongoing reviews of medical issues in our elderly trauma patients during their inpatient stay, including management of acute illness, analgesia, delirium, falls and bone health assessment and treatment.
  • Have full involvement in the multi-disciplinary team approach to rehabilitation and discharge planning for orthogeriatric patients.
  • Provide geriatric medical telephone advice to the Orthopaedic pre- admission service.
  • Participate in the development of the service, working closely with both medical and orthopaedic teams to provide greater co-ordination and improved care for our trauma geriatric patients.
  • Take a lead role on the Orthopaedic trauma ward to develop an ethos of care which encompasses comprehensive geriatrics assessment and developing a comprehensive management plan of care for all frail elderly patients with a fragility fracture.
