Job summary
Tees,
Esk and Wear Valleys Foundation Trust (TEWV) welcomes applications to the
International Psychiatric SAS Fellowship. The programme is an innovative and
structured three year sponsored scheme that supports suitably qualified
international medical graduates (who do not have GMC registration) to be
sponsored by TEWV for GMC registration with a license to practice, and then be
supported to work in TEWV to advance their existing clinical and professional
skills and receive valuable clinical experience with excellent supervised
support.
The
programme will support applicants with an interest in adult, old age, child or forensic mental health in
a variety of locations throughout the North East of England and North
Yorkshire.
This
unique opportunity is for individuals that have completed a recognised medical
degree, and a postgraduate qualification in psychiatry including a minimum of
three years experience in psychiatry and who are active in clinical practice
undertaken in the last 12 months.
This
programme is focused on doctors who do not have current registration with the
GMC of the UK; however, it is not meant for doctors who have tried but have
been unsuccessful in passing PLAB examination.
Shortlisted candidates will be offered an online (via MS Teams)
assessment, likely to take place
between 20th and 24th November 2023.
Upon successful assessment,
you will be invited to attend a face to face interview, held in a
major city of India in January / early February 2024.
Main duties of the job
£8k relocation package that can be used for travel,
accommodation, and furnishings. Part of
this figure will be used and given as a pre-paid debit card to help in the
first few weeks. In addition, this can
be used to claim back fees for IELTs/ OETS as per the doctors discretion, GMC
registration, certificate of sponsorship/visa fees
Hands on support to help you find your feet socially and
also at work in the NHS, including attendance at the GMC Welcome to UK
Practice and Duties of a Doctor programmes
27 days of annual leave per year and 30 days study leave
in the overall three-year period
Support in obtaining affiliate membership of Royal

The Tees adult mental health services comprise of 4 areas:
Middlesbrough, Stockton, Hartlepool and Redcar and Cleveland. Each locality has
an Intensive Home Treatment and Crisis Service, Access Team; functionality
split Affective and Psychosis Community Teams. Each locality has its own EIP
Service with close links to the Community Psychosis Teams.
In patient services for Middlesbrough, Stockton, Hartlepool
and Redcar and Cleveland are based at Roseberry Park. Middlesbrough which is a
new purpose built IP hospital opened in 2010. There Are 4 Adult Mental Health
Wards (64 beds in total) and a 10 bedded Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. On
average the length of stay in our wards is about 20 days.
Rehabilitation Services are provided from two Inpatient
Units based in Middlesbrough and Stockton on is fast stream 6-9 months and the
other slower 12- 24 months. There is a 24 hour Liaison Service which provides a
service to all Acute Hospitals in the Teesside area.
Local working arrangements:
The exact location of job role and the summary of local
services provided will depend on the post allocated to the doctor following GMC
approval.
Key working relationships will involve consultants, SAS
doctors (and junior doctors as well as non-medical consultant colleagues. All
teams also support admissions from other localities at times.
The doctor will have the opportunity to contribute to the
Middle Tier On-call rota in the Locality (as the second on call), supported by
junior doctors who are first on call and supervised by a consultant. The doctor
will receive an on-call supplement which is calculated as a percentage of basic
pay or as agreed by the BMA / NHS employers.
There will be an opportunity to undertake professional
activities aimed at achieving their own agreed PDP objectives required to develop
towards achieving their Section 12 approval and Approved Clinician status.
There will also be an opportunity to be part of an SAS Balint group and
opportunity to participate in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
Continuing professional development:
You will be expected to join a continuous professional
development (CPD) peer group. As a Specialty Doctor in psychiatry, you should
be either a member or affiliate of the Royal College of Psychiatrists so that
you are automatically enrolled on the Colleges CPD programme.
You will use your peer group to help identify and review
learning objectives linked to clinical, academic and professional practice in
support of your CPD.
The Trust will approve reasonable requests for study leave
which have been agreed by your CPD peer group. Approval is given by the Lead
Psychiatrist.
You are entitled to 30 days study leave in any three-year
period. Less than full time specialty doctors have a pro rata entitlement.
Appraisal and job planning:
As a psychiatric doctor you will be required to attend an
annual job plan review meeting with your associate medical director or lead
psychiatrist and managerial equivalent. This meeting will normally take place
before the end of March each year. You will bring relevant data on workload in
the previous year to the meeting, using electronic job planning software
(SARD).
There is a need for a flexible approach to the pattern of
working which may change from time to time in line with the demands from
various areas of the service and needs of the population. Changes will not be
made to your responsibilities without full consultation.
The Trust has a well-established appraisal system which is
monitored by the Responsible Officer and the Trust Board, with the Trust being
the designated body. Support and training will be available through the Trusts
Revalidation Team to help you become acquainted with the appraisal process and
system.
In order to meet the requirements for revalidation, you are
expected to engage in appraisal by attending an annual appraisal meeting and by
maintaining an electronic appraisal portfolio (SARD).
You will be encouraged to seek a mentor to support your
development in your first year of appointment. The Trust has a trained group of
mentors for you to choose from.
Prior to commencing post, you will be informed of the
corporate and local induction processes and programme. It is expected that you
will participate fully in this and keep up to date with mandatory and statutory
training on an annual basis.

We believe quality improvement is something that needs to be
driven by the Trusts employees and embodied by the actions of everyone within
the organisation
We expect all medical staff to commit themselves to quality
improvement and to learn about the Trusts Quality Improvement System, working

Undergraduate and postgraduate medical education within TEWV
is highly regarded at a regional and national level and is organised through
the Trusts medical development department and led by the Trusts Director of
Medical Education.
You will be encouraged to develop special interest sessions
and elective placements in psychiatry for medical students (sometimes known as
student selected components or SSCs). Training grade doctors at all grades are
present within the Trust, from Foundation Year 1 doctors undertaking their
first post to senior psychiatric registrars in their final year before
appointment as a consultant. All doctors are expected to make a contribution to
the Trusts postgraduate medical education work and the trust is committed to
recognising educational activity time within the job planning process.
