We are delighted to
advertise this Locum Specialist inpatient psychiatrist post at West Park
Hospital, Darlington. This post is full-time but we would welcome conversations
with potential applicants regarding flexible working options. It is a post
which offers variety, clinical challenge and strong team working. Successful
applicants would join a motivated, experienced and supportive
multi-disciplinary inpatient team which also includes SAS doctors and
multi-professional Approved Clinicians. The post holder would also work
alongside a number of other Specialist Psychiatrist/ Consultant psychiatrists
within the service which offers the opportunity for regular peer support and
collective approaches to patient care.
Main duties of the job
The two acute admission wards are Elm ward (post
advertised), and Maple ward, which is a male acute ward. Each ward comprises 20 beds. There are 4 beds
commissioned by the Ministry of Defence across the two wards (Total of 18 acute
beds on each ward and 2 MOD beds).
The population covered within the South Durham
locality is 276,000. This post covers Sedgefield, Teesdale and Wear Valley part
of the County Durham PCT and the whole of Darlington PCT with a population of
approximately 276,000 which includes working age adult population of 179,000.
The main inpatient beds for the South Durham
locality are located at West Park Hospital. In addition to the two acute
admission wards mentioned, West Park Hospital also has 15 bedded Willow Ward
for Rehabilitation Psychiatry and 10 bedded Cedar Ward (Psychiatric Intensive
Care Unit).
The local Crisis Team gate-keeps access to
inpatient beds. The Adult
Crisis Service works on a 24/7 basis to undertake comprehensive triage
assessment of individuals in a mental health crisis, with the aim of minimising
inpatient psychiatric admission where possible. For the individuals who are
admitted to inpatient services, the crisis team works with them to support
leave and recovery-based discharge and enable a productive bed flow. The crisis
service is also responsible for providing intensive home treatment and
facilitating S136 assessments outside of street triage working hours
