Speech and Language Therapist Band 5-6 Developmental Post

Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Speech and Language Therapist to join the integrated Mental Health based at HMP Humber. The service provides assessment and treatment for people who are within prison custody. Please note there is an expectation to work across HMP Humber and HMP Hull.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic person to join our growing services in Health and Justice in a band 5 - 6 development post. This vacancy is open to either a newly qualified SLT (B5) or an experienced SLT (B6) wanting to further develop their skills working within mental health and justice. You will be supported in your development by a Clinical Lead SLT and work towards a developmental framework within an agreed time scale.

The role will involve assessment and management of dysphagia and communication difficulties with adults with mental health and complex needs, including autism, learning disability and head injury providing relevant training and service development.

You will be part of a dynamic SLT service in Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, with well-defined peer support, supervision systems and CPD opportunities.

You will have a degree in Speech and Language Therapy and have significant experience including experience working with service users in mental health or learning disabilities with complex needs

Main duties of the job

To work as an integral part of the Mental Health In reach Team in the prison

Undertake complex service user assessments including interpretative assessment techniques and interventions

Develop and implement specialist interventions for service users.

With support from Clinical Lead to manage a specialist caseload from assessment to discharge . Service users may have multiple needs with a combination of physical and mental health or learning disabilities. Service users may demonstrate behaviours that challenge and may have difficult family situations of relevance. Service users may engage in violence or self- harming behaviour.

Responsible for ensuring the highest professional standards and attitudes towards the care of service users are maintained at all times and that care is delivered in accordance with evidence based practice by all members of the team.

Speech and Language Therapy is a new and developing area within health and justice service. You will be part of a wider Health and Justice SLT team who work into a range of settings and meet regularly to provide peer support and develop resources.
