Job summary

An opportunity has arisen to work within the Nursing and Governance Directorate as The Head of Professional Nursing and Education. This is an exciting, stimulating and varied role to lead the implementation and evaluation of education standards and initiatives for the Trust in line with national policy, and the long-term plan to support strategic and corporate objectives.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will maintain and continue to develop strong, positive and productive working relationships across the Trust and with Higher Education Institutes and will be visible and accessible.

The post holder will lead the team of Practice Placement Facilitators and a Senior Administrator to support the education and professional development of student nurses, trainee nursing associates and registered nurse degree apprentices to ensure that all clinical placements are well managed to support excellent learning and experience opportunities.

The post-holder will lead on Preceptorship, education, and development initiatives to include the Integration of Simulation Based Education into Non-Medical education.

The post holder will lead the development of new and exciting opportunities to widen participation to education. This will include the development of new roles/projects to attract and retain students (RePAIR), and colleagues ie TNA /RNDA.

On behalf of the Chief Nurse, the postholder will be the point of contact for Trust wide NMC communication.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Provide professional nursing leadership, advice and consultancy Trust wide, supporting the locality Heads of Nursing in each locality through professional nursing networks. Work in liaison with other professional heads on issues of joint interest e.g. Psychology, Occupational therapy Heads.

Actively support the quality assurance systems and processes as part of the corporate nursing team, supporting the monitoring and delivery of the Quality Strategy across the Trust. Within this to co-ordinate the Trust response to ADQM or equivalent external quality assurance processes around clinical educational environment.

Lead on and coordinate the Trust wide professional nursing education agenda to ensure a workforce that is fit for purpose, interfacing with Human Resources Department as required. Within this to work with Higher Education institutions and regional educational bodies on the development of new approaches and curricula.

Lead and coordinate clinical and professional supervision implementation programme for nursing staff in collaboration with locality Heads of Nursing and Professional Heads across the Trust.

Support the Locality Heads of Nursing with implementation of the Nursing Strategy and associated nursing communication and practice improvement systems across the Trust.

Lead on the provision of high quality clinical practice placement areas across the Trust meeting regulatory NMC Educational Standards and ensuring a continued supply of capacity.

Lead and coordinate the professional nursing governance systems and monitoring processes, across the Trust , including the processes for compliance with the NMC: Code of Conduct, Fitness to Practice, referral, registration and revalidation requirements, placement provision and quality, reporting on same.

Lead on quality improvement in areas of portfolio that require quality enhancement to improve performance through the use of the Trust QIS system and hosting of Kaizen events.

Promote at all times a positive image of people with mental health conditions and learning disabilities.

Promote at all times a positive image of the nursing profession, across the Nursing and Governance Directorate and the wider Trust.

In all of the above the post holder will be expected to act independently, decisively and effectively within all portfolio areas and to be able to positively and creatively challenge current thinking in order to develop new and better policy and operational working practices.

  • Significant experience in a senior management role (above A4C band 7) to evidence use of strategic and operational management skills and thinking skills.

  • To be able to demonstrate understanding and experiential knowledge of professional nursing governance and development through holding of a current 1st level nurse registration appropriate for the role.
