This new role of Consultant Practitioner will be pivotal in transforming how our services deliver person-centred support for people with learning disabilities who are at risk of presenting distress in ways that services perceive to be challenging.
As well as providing exceptional strategic and professional leadership the Consultant Practitioner will co-ordinate the small clinical caseload of an enhanced support service that is being developed. A key priority during the first 12 months in post for the Consultant Practitioner will be the establishment of this service. This team will support individuals across out community and inpatient services in Durham, Darlington & Teesside who present the most complex behavioural support needs and are experiencing highly restrictive lifestyles and support. The service will work intensively with the person and their families, existing specialist services, and the current staff team to implement positive and person-centred support. Recognising that organisational and systemic change are integral to the delivery of high-quality services and quality-of-life improvement the enhanced support service will use a practice leadership model and work collaboratively with all key stakeholders to implement positive and sustainable support.
Main duties of the job
As part of the senior leadership team the Consultant Practitioner will be expected to use their expert knowledge to promote and maintain the highest standards of care and support for people with learning disabilities who are at risk of presenting distress in ways that services perceive to be challenging. Opportunities for ongoing professional development will be essential for this role. The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate highly innovative and creative methods to embed the principles of practice leadership across a range of service and organisational systems. To act as an expert practitioner and as a source of expert advice in supporting people with learning disabilities and complex behavioural needs.
To act in a consultancy role for complex individuals, supporting the multi-disciplinary team to formulate and develop plans
To provide expert advice on the management of complex risk for individuals, including the use of restrictive practices.
To provide ongoing supervision, leadership and clinical support to Advance Practitioners working across the specialty and locality.

The Consultant Practitioner will be based within our clinical services and be able to work in partnership with both the senior clinical leadership and operational management team and our stakeholder and partners, to ensure that the service operates in a recovery focused way, enabling individuals to achieve their recovery goals.
They will be expected to lead on improving the experience of our patients, their families and/or carers by acting promptly on concerns, communicating effectively, and sharing information appropriately within a multi-agency context where collaborative working is essential. This position offers the post holder the opportunity to develop both their clinical and leadership skills and be an integral member of the senior leadership team within Learning Disability Services.
The successful candidate will be flexible and able to use initiative. They will be expected to provide senior clinical expertise, clinical leadership and to nurture and develop the delivery of high-quality patient care demonstrating excellent clinical outcomes, coordinate clinical practice, ensuring high standards of evidence-based care; take a lead in clinical audit and developing clinical practice within services. They will also need to be capable of working independently and being adaptable to the changing needs of the organisation.
