North Tees & Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust

Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Critical Care

The closing date is 29 April 2026

Job summary

The newly appointed post is for a candidate in Anaesthesia with an interest in Intensive Care Medicine. Advanced-level training in Intensive Care Medicine is desirable for this role. However, candidates who do not yet meet these criteria but are keen to develop their critical care skills are still encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will receive tailored support to further develop their skills and experience.

On-call duties will be based in the Critical Care Unit at the North Tees site. The unit is funded for 10 Level 3 and 6 Level 2 beds, with a physical capacity for 17 patients. It supports a full general medical service, emergency surgery and trauma, and elective specialties including colorectal, spinal, urology, and obstetrics.

Job plans are negotiable depending on subspecialty interests, and there are opportunities to undertake clinical sessions across other UHT hospitals, including James Cook University Hospital, Friarage Surgical Hub, and Hartlepool Surgical Hub.

For applicants with FFICM (or equivalent), opportunities for Critical Care clinical sessions at James Cook University Hospital will be considered.

Appointment to this post is subject to an Enhanced Level Criminal Records Bureau check. For further details, please contact:Dr Austin MathewsClinical Director, Theatres, Anaesthetics & Critical CareTel: 01642 624167

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role are to provide consultant-led anaesthetic care for patients in both elective and emergency settings, along with dedicated sessions in Intensive Care Medicine at North Tees. The post holder will also have opportunities for cross-site working across the University Hospital Tees group.

The on-call commitment is based at the University Hospital of North Tees and comprises a 1:12 Intensive Care rota. On-call cover for Theatres and Obstetrics is provided by a separate consultant anaesthetist; however, there is strong communication and teamwork between all resident and non-resident on-call staff. Weekend on-call duties are typically 24 hours, supported by junior staff working within a three-tier rota.

The new appointee will be expected to undertake five fixed clinical sessions, with the remaining sessions allocated to pre- and post-operative assessments, emergency duties, administration, teaching, non-resident on-call (Anaesthesia and Critical Care), and the weekend trauma list.

The Trust is committed to developing the Clinical Directorate structure and is keen for Consultant staff to build their management potential. A structured development programme is available to provide management training for consultants interested in progressing into leadership roles.
