Fetal Monitoring Midwife

Job summary

The aim of this role is to ensure that all staff providing antepartum and intrapartum care across University Hospital of North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Maternity Services are competent and skilled in fetal monitoring.

There will be a strong focus on workplace learning through supporting the multi-professional team to ensure they can accurately and confidently interpret fetal monitoring. This workplace based learning would take place in all clinical settings - the midwifery led unit, community and the delivery suite settings for example.

Main duties of the job

The role will involve working with the Senior Clinical Matron Delivery Suite, Obstetricians and education lead for maternity to embed the knowledge and skills staff gain from our fetal monitoring training course and competency framework, into the workplace. This culture of continuous learning associated with continuous measurement for improvement will provide assurance that all staff undertaking fetal monitoring are competent to provide safe care.

The role requires clinical expertise and facilitation skills, to enable the standards of risk assessment and fetal monitoring in line with element 4 of the Saving Babies' Lives Care Bundle.

The role will involve supporting the implementation of the Saving Babies Lives Bundle version 3 (SBLCB3).

To observe the Rules and Code of Conduct as laid down by the NMC.

To work in collaboration with, and support the delivery suite coordinators, the senior midwives on the antenatal wards, community, and MLU, and obstetricians, to ensure safe birth outcomes.

Be a proficient, approachable role model in addition to an expert clinician in the field of Midwifery.

To ensure effective communication has been established with parents, their families and all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure high quality care

Initiate verbal and written reports to colleagues, carers and patients

Ability to use developed interpersonal communication skills when appropriate. Use of empathy is essential.

Provide and receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information.

Provide and receive routine information requiring tact and persuasive skills, or with barriers to understanding e.g. give information to women about the service or planned intervention, offering appropriate support and reassurance.

To communicate with external agencies.

Work in collaboration with the Head of Midwifery, Clinical Matrons, Ward Managers, Obstetricians, Practice Development Midwife, Maternity Risk and Governance Team, and PMAs to report and provide constructive feedback on a regular basis, whilst identifying and disseminating learning from audits, outcomes, practice and teaching sessions

Must be able to demonstrate the English language proficiency level required for this post

Ensure the service has a structured process for escalation accordingly when concerns arise, or risks develop which is audited regularly and appropriately and findings shared at Clinical Governance meetings/audit meetings.

Facilitate and support with Practise Development lead/Obstetricians an education programme aimed at equipping midwives and Obstetricians to increase their knowledge and competence in identifying fetal well-being, potential fetal compromise and actual fetal compromise in all clinical settings and improve clinical decision making.

Review and support with current/new training packages and educational resources.

Owing to the changing nature of the service, the duties and responsibilities within posts and the obligations placed upon post holders will inevitably vary and develop. In view of this, the job description will need to be reviewed and subsequently may be altered.

Raise awareness of small for gestational age guideline and monitoring of compliance

Engage in the regional development of physiological CTG interpretation; to undertake teaching of this at Trust level.

Develop midwives' competence and confidence in undertaking intelligent intermittent auscultation of the fetal heart in low risk women as per the Trust and national guidance. Ensure staff can intelligently auscultate the fetal heart in labour and increase confidence in staff in auscultating the fetal heart intermittently.

Be innovative in approach to teaching methods and learning experiences

Provide support for staff where there are individual concerns/issues with regards to fetal surveillance.

To Lead on the implementation of the Savings Babies Lives V3, improving standards of fetal heart monitoring, interpretation, escalation, and appropriate management of care, reporting to the clinical matron for Intrapartum Care.

To identify the development and training needs around fetal monitoring within designated clinical areas according to individual needs and service requirements.

Ensure staff are assessing fetal well-being in the context of the woman's health, pregnancy, gestation and all stages of labour.

Participate in curriculum development and joint professional development activities with other agencies to maximise learning opportunities

Working with the senior midwifery team and multidisciplinary team in taking forward and shaping the future of midwifery practice in the light of the local, national and professional agenda.

Develop staffs awareness in recognising factors that could contribute to misinterpretation of cardiotocography (CTG) and impaired clinical decision making

Facilitate the orientation of fetal monitoring guidelines and practice for new members of staff

To lead the development and continuation of audit tools e.g. ATTAIN/ Fresh eyes audit.
