The pathology departments at NTH and STH are working collaboratively to develop a joint service with services being delivered on both hospital sites. This will require cross site working as appropriate.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a professional, motivated and innovativefull time HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our Cytology team in Cellular Pathology specifically to work in Diagnostic Cytology.
The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the preparation and primary screening of Diagnostic Cytology samples, attend ROSE clinics (Rapid on site evaluation), produce and maintain standard operating procedures and documentation required for accreditation and staff training.
The laboratory operates Monday to Friday between 7am - 6pm and includes Saturday working on a rotational basis between 7am - 4pm.
The Department has UKAS accreditation and IBMS training approval and has a well-established CPD programme
Main duties of the job
Under the direction of the Cellular pathology Management, the post holder will be required to perform the routine day to day operations within the Diagnostic Cytopathology department, rotating between all sections within the specialty following approved methodologies and procedures. To assist in the training and development of Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Medical Laboratory Assistants and other staff grades according to departmental policy. It is expected that the post holder will have a considerable degree of autonomy and will be able to work unsupervised for significant periods.

Maintaining an up to date knowledge base of methods in use within Cellular Pathology, specifically cytology and to be aware of scientific and technological advances within the field.

Participate in delivering a quality diagnostic cytology service including primary screening slides, auditing personal performance periodically and initiating review where necessary.
Participate in non-gynaecological external quality assessment (EQA) schemes.
Attendance at Rapid On-site Examination/Evaluation (ROSE) clinic procedures to assist with sample preparation and indication of presence/absence of cellular material for adequacy.
Recognise potential problems with sample and quality control results through result patterns and take appropriate corrective action.
