AUBC/CPP Specialist Nurse

Job summary

To lead on the development of an advanced/expert nurse specialist service for women referred with (AUB) abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, suspected endometriosis and (CPP) chronic pelvic pain.

The post holder will:

Work in collaboration with professionals within a hospital setting to give appropriate specialist advice, support and education in relation to all aspects of endometriosis/pelvic pain and related issues.

Become an autonomous nurse practitioner with extended roles and have the ability to manage complex clinical situations. Providing guidance, supervision and training to peers and junior members of staff.

Assess, develop and implement acute and chronic management plans and arrange follow up care where necessary.

Be actively involved in monitoring and developing the service to ensure women receive sustainable high quality care that is safe and effective.

Work alongside consultants to provide support for within the AUBC/CPP clinics.

Support the trust to maintain Endometriosis Centre accreditation

Main duties of the job

To lead on the development of an advanced/expert nurse specialist service for women with endometriosis & pelvic pain, ensuring the provision of specialist and advanced/expert advice and support to multi professional teams to improve the way in which services are provided and access to service for women.

Job responsibilities

To be an ambassador, and advocate for endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain care in the region and nationally.

To assess the needs of women with pelvic pain to ensure that they receive a clinically effective assessment and treatment.

Work alongside Consultants and provide support for their AUBC/CPP clinics

Assess womens information needs and provides relevant information to meet those needs, enabling individuals to access, identify, appraise and interpret information.

To ensure, with support of MDT that Clinical guidelines and procedures are in place which ensure the safety of women and staff and meet local and national guidance.

To demonstrate extensive knowledge of endometriosis and provide written and verbal information, give advice, counselling, support to women and their families.

To act as an autonomous nurse practitioner by planning and organising own workload effectively and being accountable for the quality and standard of work individually performed.

To run a nurse led clinic, take detailed history of symptoms, request / carry out investigations such as blood tests; work towards competencies aligned to performing pelvic ultrasound as part of pt investigations and introduce appropriate assessment tools.

To receive direct new referrals to the clinic, appropriate follow up and ensure that they receive a clinically effective assessment and treatment.

To be a point of contact for the woman, general public and other health professionals and provide information as necessary.

To gain consent for any procedures and be aware of potential diminished responsibility by assessing mental capacity, clarity and degree of confusion.

To be fully conversant with all drugs used in the service and to undertake relevant drug administration training when necessary either using PGDS or as a non-medical prescriber following training if required.

To provide pre-operative support to ensure each woman has necessary information and has been appropriately prepared to proceed with surgery.

To provide post-operative support in conjunction with the consultant, acting on management plan, arranging follow-up appointments and referral to other services.

To provide post-operative support by explaining findings and organising further management and appointments.

To provide telephone follow-up support as appropriate.

To contribute to relevant databases local and national.

To liaise with and refer to appropriate health care professionals when necessary.

To request information regarding past history and treatment from other services/hospital trusts and provide information for ongoing treatment.

To perform any relevant clinical audits on activity or woman satisfaction surveys.

To provide education and support for junior doctors and nurses within the Trust who care for women.

To act as a mentor for students and other junior staff ensuring learning is commensurate with education needs.

To be an excellent clinical role model and act as a clinical resource, providing advice, support and supervision to primary and secondary health care professionals regarding specialist woman management.

Keep clinically up to date within the specialities of endometriosis, general gynaecology and associated services to provide holistic care.

Communicate effectively and refer to woman and primary care teams on the clinical condition and treatment plans of women to ensure continuity of care.

Promote multi-professional working by ensuring relevant information is effectively communicated to the consultants and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Communicate and consult with relevant staff effectively prior to, during and after any clinical or service change process.

To ensure that allocated resources are managed effectively and efficiently, including effective utilisation of time and equipment.

To ensure the safety of the clinical area by identifying and assessing potential risk to self or others and by the reporting of critical incidents.

Monitor, develop and support services in response to women and organisational needs in line with the Trusts Clinical Governance Agenda.

Ensure quality standards set are met through initiation and or participation in audit and research.
