Job summary

We require an enthusiastic, experienced and conscientious clinician to work as Clinical Lead for the tees Community Dental service.

Tees Community Dental Service provides dental care for people of all ages, including adults and children with special needs both in primary and secondary care settings, throughout the whole of the Tees Valley. A caring and empathetic manner is essential.

The challenging and rewarding work of community dentistry spans a wide range of services in which there will be ample opportunity for involvement, including opportunities to practice all clinical facets of special care dentistry, administer and treat patients under inhalation sedation and provide treatment under general anaesthesia/iv sedation in the hospital theatre setting.

Full General Dental Council registration is essential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible and accountable for the leadership, management, strategic planning and delivery of high quality specialised clinical dental services, epidemiology and screening programmes in Tees Community Dental Service.

The Clinical Lead for CDS will have a leading role in relation to day to day operational issues in the Department, particularly in relation to the Senior Dental Officer team.

The post holder will play a key role in ensuring that patient safety, quality and effective governance are robustly embedded in the Department across all sites.

The Clinical Lead will work in tandem with the Consultant/Specialist in Special Care Dentistry/Paediatrics, the Senior Clinical Professional and the senior management team for the Care Group to ensure robust service provision. The Clinical Lead will also be expected to input in respect of the strategic development and service improvement of the Department.

The key remit of the role is to play a pivotal role in ensuring the Department provides a high quality service to patients and their families and carers.

The post holder will be expected to maintain a clinical caseload.

With regard to clinical element of this post, there is flexibility for the post holder to work across any of the Tees Community Dental service sites including Hartlepool, Stockton, Guisborough and North Ormesby localities.

Job responsibilities

Provide clinical leadership, advice and support to the multidisciplinary team, ensuring that they are able to contribute effectively to the development and smooth operation of the Department. Overseeing the planning and delivery of clinical activity in line with commissioned activity including General Anaesthetic and Sedation provision within the department.

In leading, comply with and promote the core principle of Putting the Patient First; to be a strong advocate for improving the experience of our patients, their families and carers.

To provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence to whom staff, stakeholders, patients and their families can turn to for assistance, advice and support.

Promote patient safety, quality and effective clinical governance within the Department. To liaise with the Service Lead, Senior Clinical Professional & Patient safety team with regard to complaints and untoward incidents as per Trust practice e.g. investigating clinical incidents, creating relevant action plans and communicating these to staff to ensure compliance.

Undertake a thorough assessment of patients and subsequently plan and manage care where there are complex medical co morbidities or the situation requires the involvement of other professionals and or carers to resolve complex patient management issues.

MANAGEMENT/LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

Delegate key roles and responsibilities to other members of the Dental and multidisciplinary team as appropriate.

Maintain and enhance effective communication and team working both within the Tees Community Dental Service, with colleagues in the wider Trust and with stakeholders and partners external to the Trust.

To work with the Dental Consultant/Specialist to assess current and future resource implications of service change and modernisation; to work with senior management colleagues to help ensure these needs are resourced. In particular in this regard, to be a strong advocate for multidisciplinary working and new ways of working.

To work with the Dental Consultant/Specialist and the senior management team to define clear service objectives to ensure the most clinically and cost effective deployment of resources and the provision of a modern CDS service to a high standard.

To undertake both Performance reviews & clinical supervision jointly with Consultant for the SDOs/other clinical staff where appropriate.

Delegated responsibility for Lead for Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD), work with regional Radiation Protection Advisors and Radiation Protection Supervisors to ensure compliance, Medical Devices & GA, e.g. attendance at Theatre meetings.

The role covers all operational management of SDOs including attendance management, appraisals, 1:1s, personal and clinical performance monitoring, clinical supervision and training and development etc. Therefore the post holder will be an effective team player with the ability to lead, supervise and motivate staff teams and facilitate and implement change as needed.

Work with commissioners, Senior Clinical Professional, Contracts Manager and other members of the Senior Management team to plan and implement clinical services in order to meet contractual requirements.

POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

To ensure awareness, and support the rollout of, relevant national guidance and best practice in the Tees Community Dental Service e.g. GDC, NHS England, SDCEP, BSPD Guidance and relevant documents etc.

To lead on all quality issues including standard setting and clinical governance, improving the quality of patient care and management of clinical risk by improving clinical performance.

To work with the CDS line management team to develop, implement and review Trust and departmental protocols, guidelines and SOPs. To ensure compliance within the department and regular evaluation of standards.

Experience and understanding of the principles of Oral Health Promotion and Dental Public Health including annual BASCD survey.

RESEARCH AND AUDIT RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holder is responsible for clinical audit within the department to ensure the department complies with appropriate national guidance. To secure and assure the highest standards of patient care and take a lead role in the implementation of audit and benchmarking.

MANAGING RESOURCES

To work closely with the Service Lead/Senior Clinical Professional/Dental Nurse Manager to ensure staff within the area are deployed effectively and appropriately ensuring effectiveness and equity of service provision.
