Job summary

Kent and Medway Communication and Assistive Technology (KM CAT) Service is a specialised Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) service covering Kent and Medway. The service provides highly specialised advice and solutions on communication needs to clients with severe disabilities and complex needs. The disabilities encountered by many of the Service's clients impact significantly on their independence, ability to communicate, to access education and to their general well-being.

The service is comprised of two teams. The Children and Young People (CYP) team is based in Ashford and the Adult Team is based in Canterbury. The post holder will be based at the Children and Young People (CYP) team Ashford, although there may be a requirement to provide cover at the other base, as needed. You are also expected to travel within Kent and Medway at times.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic Individual with a background in Medical Engineering or similar, and excellent team working skills. This post is to support the service to provide a multi-disciplinary Specialist Communication Aid Service in Kent and Medway. Our caseload is primarily clients with complex disabilities who have communication difficulties.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide specialist Assistive Technology and Rehabilitation Engineering technical support within a multidisciplinary team comprising of Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapist, Clinical Scientists, Clinical Technologists.

To provide the KMCAT team with technical support in client assessments/clinics by providing assistive technology solutions for complex physical, communication and learning needs.

To provide computing/software/hardware support to setup and configure specialised communication aids as part of a multidisciplinary team to create solutions for individual clients.

To provide support in the management of computer-based communication aids using the appropriate management software such as IOS Apple configurator to lock down and restrict activity.

The post holder would be responsible for replacing/repairing a variety of computing/hardware equipment when equipment breakdowns occur. The post holder will be responsible for either fault finding or liaising with AAC suppliers to ensure that replacement/repairs are completed within the service specification.

To undertake visit to homes, schools, institutions and clinics throughout Kent and Medway.

To be responsible for the mounting of Assistive Technology. The post holder will take a lead role in the mounting of AAC communication devices and will support in the completion of pre-delivery checks in terms of risk assessment documentation.

To support in maintaining the life cycle of medical equipment by carrying out electrical safety testing and mechanical checks.

To support the CYP KM CAT service in the manufacturing of custom-made equipment using light engineering machinery/hand tools within the workshop.

To work within and assist in the development of the ISO 9001-2015 Quality Management System. To assist with maintaining and updating quality procedures and work instructions specific to the service.

Qualifications and training

Essential

  • BSc / BEng in a relevant scientific or engineering subject.

Desirable

  • Member of the Register of Clinical Technologists maintained by the Institute of Physics & Engineering in Medicine.
  • BEng qualifications in Rehabilitation Engineering,
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.

Clinical skills and experience

Essential

  • Experience of setting-up, maintaining and troubleshooting electronic systems.
  • Experience of using hand tools equipment in a mechanical workshop

Desirable

  • A minimum of 2 years post graduate experience as a registration Clinical Technologist in Rehabilitation Engineering or in a clinical discipline involving the application of electronic, electrical, mechanical or computer engineering skills.
  • Able to read and produce engineering drawings or good quality sketches with dimensions and have a good understanding of engineering measurement.
  • Experience of working with people with physical disabilities and sensory impairments.
  • Experience of training others.
