Job summary

Occupational Health Clinic Nurse Role specific duties

To deliver a comprehensive immunisation and vaccination service for Trust employees and to external contracts and clients of the Trust Occupational Health department.

To review EKHUFT employees immunisation records and maintain in the electronic occupational health record system.

To ensure reported health issues are dealt with in a professional manner within the post holder's area of competence.

As an OH Clinic Nurse you will have responsibility for the standards of care delivered within your service area and will be accountable for the effective management of clinical and non-clinical risk reporting to the senior team within the OH risk and governance framework.

To assist Occupational Health in promoting health, safety and wellbeing at work in relation to Health Surveillance/Health Assessments.

To assist Occupational Health in screening work health questionnaires and assessing risks from exposure incidents.

To assist Occupational Health in promoting and maintaining the health and wellbeing of all employees by contributing to initiatives and project work.

Responsible for checking & ordering of pharmacy stock and ensuring safe storage and preparation of vaccines.

Responsible for ordering and maintaining items required for stock supplies.

Daily conduct safety checks on set equipment e.g. fridge temperatures, emergency equipment.

Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent emergency situations e.g. anaphylaxis.

Process applications for access to routine occupational health records in line with legislation e.g. vaccination data, laboratory reports.

Work within the NMC Code and all Trust policies and guidelines.

Clinical

Provide an efficient immunisation & vaccination service for all clients of the occupational health service operating within local procedures and professional standards.

To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of clients in your care.

To undertake venepuncture after appropriate training, assessment and experience in relation to a variety of clinical needs.

Following appropriate training, provide and maintain the skills required for the assessment of immunisation history and on-going immunisation programmes for all personnel who are at risk of exposure to pathogens during the course of their work.

Following appropriate training, provide and maintain the highly developed skills of assessment and vaccine administration required for Tuberculin (Mantoux) testing and the administration of BCG vaccination.

To advise employees following needlestick injury or bodily fluid exposure incident, advising on risk assessment and the appropriate action in line with Trust policy and department protocols.

To assess employee in a sensitive and reassuring manner following needlestick/ contamination incidents, providing support during potentially emotionally distressing circumstances.

To provide on-going support and information to employees and management throughout their follow up period.

To undertake limited employment health assessment in line with department policies, under the supervision of the Senior OH Nurse or Consultant Occupational Physician.

Following training, assess the health of prospective employees using telephone skills and associated interview techniques, taking into account pre-existing medical conditions and job role specifics.

To participate in providing consistent, accurate advice to management and staff regarding health-related queries via the duty nurse rota.

To participate in health & well-being promotional and educational activities.

Assist the occupational health department with audit and research.

Promote health & safety and wellbeing in the work environment.

Ensure accurate, legible records are kept for each client in line with the NMC guidance, and Access to Medical Records Act 1988 and maintain the security of records within the department to comply with the GDPR/Data Protection legislation.

Periodically participate in the induction, training and supervision of new staff members.

Work within the NMC Code and all Trust policies and guidelines.

Work within the occupational health multidisciplinary team.

Liaise with senior members of the occupational health team with regards to activity, which is not within set predetermined standards to ensure appropriate client care.

Establish and maintain good relationships with clients, occupational health team and other disciplines as applicable.

Provide information and instruction to employees to make informed decisions e.g. benefits of vaccination / disease reduction. This should be clear, consistent and unambiguous.

To have the ability to communicate with people using a different range of media and across a variety of staff groups.

Signpost users to health literature, other agencies.

Provide written clinical advice to individual employees and their managers on defined aspects of staff health e.g. employment screening, etc.

Apply principles of confidentiality at all time, in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council and occupational health ethics.

Daily use of the computer data base to process key diary and statistical information e.g. processing appointment type, capturing vaccination details and data input of clinical information such as microbiology laboratory reports.
