East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust

Consultant Urological Surgeon (Interest in Stone Surgery and Holep)

The closing date is 19 October 2025

Job summary

The Urology department is delighted to offer an appointment for a urological surgeon with an interest in all treatment options for urinary stones and establish a Holep service at East Kent Hospitals.

All cases are discussed in a dedicated stone MDT and therefore allows in depth discussion of challenging cases with established stone surgeons. This meeting is supported by stone nurse specialists and a coordinator. We currently have facilities for PCNL, on site ESWL and flexible and rigid ureteroscopy.

We would like to develop a metabolic stones clinic to support the service, allied to our renal medicine colleagues and therefore opens a further opportunity for a stone surgery specialist. GIRFT data has shown that we have a high volume of stone surgery. Multiple bladder Outlet treatments are available but currently all patients for Holep are sent to a neighbour Trust. This is a service we would like to introduce at East Kent.

The successful candidate will join a well established unit with allied co-specialties including vascular surgery, 24 hours cover for interventional radiology and renal medicine on-site. The consultant on-call rota is 1 in11 with this appointment with full middle grade cover 24-7. We are a forward thinking department with a young consultant body. Therefore we are happy to consider adapting job plans to accommodate family and home life.

Main duties of the job

Key features: The stone service is well established at East Kent NHS Trust and we are proud to have added a brand new in-house shockwave lithotripter to the department in the last year. This is housed in a state-of-the-art lithotripter suite with consultation rooms and a waiting area.

The successful candidate will have experience in or a desire to develop PCNL, which is already established. The successful candidate will have experience in Holep and will be supported by the department in establishing the service in east Kent and support the one stop Male LUTs clinic.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop a service supported by an associate specialist and senior middle grade surgeons. New technologies: Da Vinci Robot, fixed site ESWL suite, Urology suite with One-stop LUTS clinics

Fully supported on-call cover, with on-site interventional radiology, ITU and vascular surgery.

Kent and Medway Medical School - we encourage development of teaching and training links with the new medical school. The Trust has recently opened a Clinical Trials Unit based at our Margate site.
