Tobacco Dependency Advisor

Job summary

Supporting people in a smoke-free journey can be an emotive topic. The post requires conversations to be held about potential harm and risk to the person in order to highlight the importance of quitting smoking. Support will be available with this from the Lead and other obstetric colleagues.

The job will be reviewed on a regular basis in order to ensure that the duties meet the requirements of the service and to make any necessary changes

Main duties of the job

Provide advice and support to clinical staff, using the support of interventions such as CO monitoring, behavioural support, practical and social support, and Nicotine Replacement Therapy/QUIT programme.

Work with the specialist Lead to deliver stop smoking support, and assist with administration of the smoke free data collection and collation.

Order and maintain stocks of Nicotine Replacement Therapy and issuing it to service users as per agreed guidance.

Promote the general health and wellbeing of people who use the service through offering healthy lifestyle advice and support.

Seek out opportunities to develop and implement stop smoking services in a range of health and community settings.

Work with minimal indirect supervision operating within the assessed level of competence and being accountable for all aspects of own work.

Escalate and record any possible safeguarding issues to the relevant agencies and seek support in this from the inhouse safeguarding team and lead.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To plan and deliver stop smoking advice and support sessions, including advice on stop smoking medications, working within recommended protocols and guidelines. This may involve individual, telephonic, on-line and group work sessions in a variety of settings and venues.

Identify and approach people who are eligible for tobacco dependence conversations and treatment in a variety of different settings. These may be in a clinical area or virtually.

Develop individually tailored support plans including recommending treatments based on assessed needs.

Provide general health, lifestyle advice and support to people using the service (e.g. healthy eating, physical activity, stress management). This will include individual and group-based interventions, signposting and referring to other health, community, and voluntary services.

Participate in educating people about the benefits of stopping smoking and give support to those wanting to quit. Promote smoke free homes and support and advise people and their families about passive smoking.

Deliver Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring to a high standard and engage in the data collection and collation of CO rates in pregnancy and post-partum.

Keep accurate records and enable good data collection. Maintain accurate up to date and comprehensive records at all times.

Ensure that the relevant equipment is provided and maintained on an agreed schedule. Report any failings of equipment or other environmental factors to the Lead.

Respond effectively to referrals within stated timescales self-referrals from the individuals, and those from colleagues /other workers/GPs.

To be involved in the monitoring and evaluation of client feedback, offering recommendations as part of the team to improve services.

Enable utilisation of the smokefree platform, for recording patient data, outcomes, review own personal performance against programme KPIs

Ensure the lone worker policy is followed at all times; with Lone worker devices worn and communication with the team before and after visits

Be aware of how to report incidents, concerns or complaints and escalate any concerns or complexities to the lead.

Take every reasonable opportunity to maintain and update knowledge, competence and skill, and maintain a record of own equipment.

Participate in delivering training and induction for new staff within the Trust regarding the Trusts Smoke Free Policy, the QUIT programme and tobacco dependency treatment.

Work closely with General Practitioners and community teams, where appropriate, to facilitate tobacco dependency treatment, maintenance of successful quit attempts post discharge.

Act as a smoke free champion and actively promote and support implementation of the Trusts smoke free policy; support and mentor smoke free champions nominated by clinical teams
