Job summary

Surgical Emergency Assessment Unit is an acute surgical and orthopaedic unit at the QEQM in Margate. Our admissions come from Accident and Emergency, GR surgeries, and other clinical areas.

Our patients are often very unwell and the conditions range from appendicitis, to major bowel surgery.

The Unit is busy rewarding and exciting and will provide excellent experience for anyone interested in surgical nursing. Our patient turnover is high.

The Unit is managed by Sophie Reid. Our Matron Rebecca Gosling is on site daily. We have excellent working relationships with both the Management team in the Surgical division and the Medical staff.

Our staff are required to have excellent skills in communication and team work. They must be dynamic and able to work under pressure.

As a team we are committed to teaching and learning. The Trust provides a comprehensive package of training and study. All staff are encouraged through the Appraisal system to maintain their skills and undertake new challenges. We have a good mix of nursing staff with a wealth of knowledge and skills to impart

We have strong links with Christchurch and have nursing students at all stages throughout their training on the ward.

Main duties of the job

To work as a team member within the work environment carrying out assigned tasks involving the direct/indirect care of the patient in support of, and supervised by, a registered nurse.

You will be required to carry out many different skills within the unit, ranging from venipuncture and cannulation, basic wound care using aseptic non touch technique, observations, pre operative and post operative care and many more clinical skills.

We have development days within the division for HCA's and Band 5 Nurses which all staff are invited to attend.

The team in SEAU are hardworking and committed to providing a high standard of care. In this current climate this can be challenging, however we strive to make the workplace fun and enjoyable with strong peer support and guidance
