Job summary

Consultant Medical Microbiologist (Infection). Part-time (0.5 wte minimum) or Full-time

This is a replacement post for a medically qualified appointee to Consultant level to be part of a clinical infection team comprising 6 consultants (5 medical and 1 clinical scientist), 3 clinical fellows and 1 Foundation Year 2 (FY2) doctor. There are ongoing discussions within the Trust to develop and create an Infectious Diseases team across the significant geographical area covering all of East Kent.

This post attracts 11 PAs, of which 8 are for direct clinical care (DCC), 2 supporting professional activity (SPA), and an additional 1 PA is paid for the out-of-hours on-call commitment (1:5) attracting a band A supplement.

The Trust has 3 main sites: William Harvey Hospital (Ashford), Kent & Canterbury Hospital (Canterbury), the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital (Margate). The microbiology laboratory for the Trust is sited at William Harvey Hospital, Ashford; however the Clinical Microbiology services function out of all 3 sites. Each site based Clinical Microbiology team consists of 1 Consultant and 1 Clinical Fellow.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant rota currently operates on a cycle of 5 fortnights. All weeks will include a mixture of the DCC activities (described below) and consist of each microbiologist providing clinical cover for each of the three main hospital sites (i.e. WHH, QEQM and K&C, 2 weeks each site) followed by 2 weeks of back up to site microbiology teams covering eConsults [Careflow] referrals and 2 weeks being back up for covering duty desk. There is flexibility in the rota to consider other commitments which may require presence on a specific site. The appointee, together with consultant colleagues, will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, efficient clinical microbiology, virology and infection prevention and control service to EKHUFT and other users of the service such as consultant colleagues, GUM physicians and lead respiratory physicians for tuberculosis management, GPs, antibiotic pharmacists, infection prevention and control nurses, and health protection consultants. Participate in, and offer medical advice through a Microbiologist duty desk daily rota.

They will participate in a rota of regular commitments to specific units, such as haemato/oncology, renal medicine, neurology, SCBU and orthopaedics, together with daily ward rounds to intensive care and high dependency units and review of significant ward patients.

Contribute to the activities and development of microbiology in line with user needs and expectations and reflect the changing function of a Consultant Microbiologist. This will include business planning, including the assessment and introduction of new methods, and forward planning for staff and equipment requirements.
