Trainee BMS
This permanent opportunity offers an exciting opportunity for a motivated, focused and enthusiastic HCPC registered/pre-registration BMS to either further develop their specialist knowledge and skills in Haematology & Blood Transfusion or train towards HCPC registration in a highly commended training environment.
Our laboratories have recently been upgraded with state of the art automated systems to manage our ever increasing demand. We are also fully UKAS ISO 15189:2012 accredited as are all Pathology disciplines within the organisation. Our Transfusion laboratories are also fully MHRA compliant.
Our services offer an exciting range of diagnostic tests and have a strong training ethos linked to career development e.g. IBMS Specialist Portfolio/Higher Specialist Diploma. We have specialist Flow Cytometry and Haemoglobinopathy services within our repertoire and our busy Blood Transfusion services provide blood product support to the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance service and have some of the best blood product wastage figures in the country.
After successful training and competency assessment/HCPC registration the successful candidate will be expected to fully participate in our continuous processing pattern (CPP), 24-7 365, including nights, weekends and bank holidays. This system is fully WTD compliant.
Main duties of the job
The Pathology department comprises of Clinical Biochemistry, Immunology, Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Haemostasis and Thrombosis, Cellular Pathology and Microbiology responsible for processing in excess of 11 million tests (3.5 million requests) per year. Pathology services at EKHUFT are within the Kent and Medway Pathology Network (South 8) and are in discussion regarding transforming pathology services for the future.
The post holder will be an individual with an IBMS accredited degree as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist or an already HCPC state registered Biomedical Scientist working in our Haematology and Blood Transfusion departments at the William Harvey Hospital (WHH).
The Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratories are processing Acute Urgent work, Inpatient and Outpatient work and also the GP work for the entire East Kent region using state of the art modern Sysmex, Stago and IBG Immucor automation. The departments are operating 24/7 and the post holder will be part of a close team of Apprentices, Assistant Healthcare Scientists and Biomedical Scientists.
The department has a strong training ethos and has IBMS registration and specialist portfolio training status and the post holder once meeting designated criteria will be supported in progressing onto Specialist portfolio completion. The department also works closely with the IBMS delivering certificates of expert practice.
