Training will be provided for this role, with potential training opportunities for future career progression.
We are a multispecialty service focusing on the early diagnosis and management of hearing loss in children and young people. Our patient centred service aims to provide in depth diagnostic assessment, investigation and habilitative management in order to meet each child's hearing needs.
We strive to maintain close contact with multidisciplinary team members including speech and language therapists, teachers of the deaf and paediatric consultants in order to provide a comprehensive service in line with national and international guidelines and best practice.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will deliver high quality patient centred care. They will work autonomously providing audiological assessments, rehabilitation, diagnosis and treatment plans to the paediatric caseload within both hospital and community clinics.
To support the Consultant Audiovestibular Physician and the Lead Paediatric Audiologist in providing a high-quality service.
To take an active role in areas of clinical audit; research and clinical governance for the audiology service, which may include designing and completing audits within own fields, participating in data collection for larger projects and contributing to the development of evidence-based protocols.

Clinical
- To carry out audiological duties, in accordance with BSA, BAA, Local Audiology & Trust policies, procedures, and practices.
- To undertake audiological clinics at various sites across East Kent
- To perform a full range of audiological procedures on children aged 0-18yrs, including those with learning difficulties and complex needs
- To take the lead role in Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA) clinics.
- To adapt testing procedures and strategies efficiently to suit the individual patients needs.
- To dispense and maintain digital hearing aids, using departmental/national guidelines and protocols, to include verification using RECD & REMs.
- To manage parents/carers expectations.
- Assessment of babies/children on their needs for non-standard hearing aids (e.g. cochlear implants, CROS/BICROS, BCHA, BAHA)
- Provide information on alternative sources of help and support (social services, education, voluntary organisations and hearing aid dispensers)
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (Specialist teacher for hearing impairment, SALT, educational professional, etc.) to ensure the most optimum management and outcomes for our PCHI children.
- To take accurate ear impressions of patients. To give careful instructions to the patient/and or carer about this procedure.
- Assist senior colleagues in more advanced audiological procedures.
- Produce factual and accurate reports on all investigations to help determine course of action.
- To ensure patients records, statistics and any other information required, are accurately recorded and collated in accordance with the need of the service on the patient management system (Auditbase) and S4H.
Non- Clinical
- Assist Lead audiologist to maintain current PCHI (permanent childhood hearing impairment) database
- To assist the Lead audiologist with the local implementation of national priorities in relation to NHSP and Paediatric Audiology.
- To attend and lead team meetings to discuss progress and address any areas of concern.
- Represent Paediatric Audiology at Trust, Regional and National meetings and at training events.
- To ensure quality of service and best practice for patients.
- To keep up to date with developments and ensure that appropriate changes are incorporated into patient care. To monitor national and international developments in the field of Paediatric Audiology, in conjunction with the Service Manager and to help develop departmental policies to ensure that evidence-based practice is implemented.
Teaching and Development
- To provide clinical support and expert advice to departmental staff regarding paediatric Audiology.
- To provide training and support for non-audiological staff as and when required including school nurses, health visitors, medical students etc
- To assist with the delivery of internal training programmes.
- To assist with clinical audit and research projects.
- To attend professional meeting and study sessions, as appropriate and keep an up to date professional portfolio. Reporting back to other staff members on particular areas as required.
Professional
- To maintain personal, professional status by ensuring that it meets the requirements as laid down by the BAA/BSA/RCCP.
- Identify own and others training needs relevant to the improvement of paediatric Audiology services and provide training where appropriate
