Job summary
To develop and maintain specialist skills using evidence based care in order to provide the highest standard of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised patient care with a range of conditions within a paediatric environment.
To utilise a variety of strategies to communicate effectively with the children and their family/carers, the multidisciplinary team, other departments within the Trust and pertinent agencies outside the organisation.
Main duties of the job
- To provide child centred, evidence based, high quality care to children and their
- families in the acute paediatric ward setting.
- To implement and evaluate family centred care and to be responsible for the delivery of care and assessment, development and evaluations of individual programmes of care
- To take delegated responsibility for children working as part of a team to ensure care delivered is to a high standard
- To be responsible for mentoring pre-registration students

- To deliver evidence based care to a high standard, providing a holistic approach to nursing care.
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for children within a defined clinical area under the supervision of an experienced nurse.
- Actively support and promote the involvement of parents/carers in the planning, management and evaluation of care by working together in partnership.
- To assess risks to children, be able to recognise vulnerable children and respond in accordance with the Trust policy for Safeguarding Children, seeking support from senior staff when required.
- Establish and maintain effective communication with parents and relatives, ensuring they have sufficient confidence, assistance and support to enable them to care for their child in preparation for discharge.
- Be an advocate for the child and promote good liaisons and effective communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
- To be a safe practitioner, ensuring appropriate documentation and care is in accordance with NMC guidelines.
- Adhere to the Trusts Policies and Procedures and participate in the regular review of nursing practice, policies, procedures and protocols.
- Safely administer prescribed medications and to monitor their effects.
- Ensure competency and safe maintenance of all medical devices within the sphere of responsibility.
- To develop clinical skills in order to be regularly responsible for the management and co-ordination of the clinical area during a span of duty.
