Job summary

The post-holder will work within the Governance and Risk Team and will assist in the management of compliance projects, including (but not limited to) the roll out of Maternity Continuity of Carer, CNST Maternity Incentive Scheme and Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle v3. The post-holder will also be responsible for the management of local audit (including audits following Serious/other clinical incidents) and other special projects arising from national reports, initiatives and regulatory requirements. The post holder will work closely with the senior management team, and will be critical to the successful delivery of the Maternity and Trust corporate objectives.The post-holder will have overall responsibility within the Maternity Services in leading and delivering audit requirements, ensuring an infrastructure that will deliver a level of service which is equitable, evidence based and consistent with the national standards and expectations. The post holder will be accountable for the overall provision of high midwifery standards of care and provide evidenced based woman centred midwifery care, which can be delivered in a variety of models. The post holder will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, other agencies and user representatives.

The post-holder will also be expected to support general governance activity as part of the Governance and Risk Team, as required.

The post-holder is expected to work flexibly across all locations on the Trust.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist with the roll out of the Maternity Continuity of Carer model (MCoC).
  • Assist with, and provide expert advice in relation to the CNST Maternity Incentive scheme, including maintenance of an over-arching action plan, working in collaboration with the lead for each safety action and collating evidence for Board sign-off.
  • The post holder will have responsibility for co-ordinating and participating in audit projects relating to MCoC, CNST and national report recommendations/IEAs.
  • Work with the Clinical Director, Director of Midwifery and Gynaecology Nursing, the Lead Midwife for Clinical Governance and Risk, the Obstetric Audit Lead, the Trust Audit and Effectiveness Team and Trust-Wide Quality Team to ensure other audit projects are prioritised and undertaken in a timely manner.
  • Ensure, with the divisional management team, that the Maternity Service is compliant with identified national quality standards, ensuring robust mechanisms are in place to assess adherence, and that measures are implemented to make changes.
  • Present audit findings and recommendations to the multi-disciplinary team through meetings and audit days.
  • Assist the Division to fulfil its obligations in relation to CQC and other external standards, including the management of any emergent risks.

We operate two busy general hospitals, Epsom HospitalandSt Helier Hospital, andrun services from other locations, includingSutton Hospital.

St Helier Hospital is home to theSouth West Thames Renal and Transplantation UnitandQueen Mary's Hospital for Children, while Epsom Hospital is home to theSouth West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). Both Epsom and St Helier hospitals haveAccident and Emergency departments (A&E)andMaternity services (Obstetrics).

Epsom and St Helier have around 3,800 births annually. Acute and planned maternity services are offered across to hospital sites (Epsom General Hospital and St Helier Hospital) as well as in the community setting. Both units have a birth centre adjacent to Labour Ward.

The post-holder will assist the effective delivery and roll out of the Maternity Continuity of Carer model to ensure targets are consistently met. The post-holder will also assist the effective delivery of the Maternity Incentive Scheme (CNST) and the responses and action plans associated with all relevant national reports/independent review recommendations. In collaboration with the clinical teams, the post holder will lead on and undertake various audits and co-ordinate any associated recommendations and action plans. This will include a requirement to:

  • Support and provide guidance to all staff within maternity services in relation to patient safety and clinical governance and contribute to, and monitor the effectiveness of, the maternity Risk Management Strategy.

  • Assist with the roll out of the Maternity Continuity of Carer model (MCoC).

  • Assist with, and provide expert advice in relation to the CNST Maternity Incentive scheme, including maintenance of an over-arching action plan, working in collaboration with the lead for each safety action and collating evidence for Board sign-off.

  • The post holder will have responsibility for co-ordinating and participating in audit projects relating to MCoC, CNST and national report recommendations/IEAs.

  • Assist with audit work streams that directly feed into compliance with the Maternity Incentive Scheme (CNST) and other safety recommendations, such as ATAIN, SBLCBv2 etc.

  • Provide assurance that all eligible cases are reported externally to HSSIB, NHS Resolution Early Notification Scheme and MBRRACE-UK.

  • Promote and maintain cohesive working relationships with obstetricians, the neonatal team (medical and nursing) anaesthetists and other specialists.

  • In partnership with the Bereavement Team and Risk Team, ensure that the MBRRACE-UK Perinatal Mortality Review Tool (PMRT) is used to review all eligible cases to the required standard as described in the CNST Technical Guidance.

  • Work with the Clinical Director, Director of Midwifery and Gynaecology Nursing, the Lead Midwife for Clinical Governance and Risk, the Obstetric Audit Lead, the Trust Audit and Effectiveness Team and Trust-Wide Quality Team to ensure audit projects are prioritised and undertaken in a timely manner.
