Job summary
The appointee will be expected to deliver first class perioperative care to all surgical patients at South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). The model of care at SWLEOC is a 24/7 consultant lead service working with senior nurse practitioners. The model of care developed at the centre requires excellent communication skills as the on-going care and management of the patients is delivered by the anaesthetists with close communication with the orthopaedic surgeon.
The centre has six operating theatres and surgery takes place across six days. The appointee will work 2 weekdays including Friday, but also have the opportunity to provide additional sessions on the bank.
The appointee will have the opportunity to work with the established SWLEOC research department participating in studies relating to perioperative care. The appointee will also work closely with the Medical Director, SWLEOC Director and Head of Nursing who form the triumvirate management structure at SWLEOC.

The role involves providing high-quality peri-operative and post-operative anaesthetic care for patients at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). Working within a 24/7 consultant-led model alongside senior nurse practitioners, the anaesthetist plays a central role in ongoing patient management, requiring strong communication and close collaboration with orthopaedic surgeons.

Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- 1 year of orthopaedic anaesthesia in either teaching hospital or specialist unit in UK
- medical qualification registered with the GMC
- Entry onto the Specialist Register for GMC or be within six months of obtaining CCT in Anaesthesia
- MBBS or equivalent.
- FRCA or equivalent.
- Evidence of long standing membership of relevant societies and CPD in relevant specialism.
- 1+ years Consultant level experience within NHS, UK.
Desirable
- Further post graduate or undergraduate qualifications.
- Academic distinctions or prizes
Clinical skills & knowledge
Essential
- Has knowledge and skills at consultant level in anaesthesia.
- Capable of providing anaesthesia for patients aging from 16 years and ASA grades 1-5.
- Proven skills at regional anaesthetic techniques.
Desirable
- Experienced in trauma anaesthesia.
- Technical skills to include advanced airway management techniques eg. Fibreoptic intubation, video larygoscopy.
Audit & Research
Essential
- Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit.
- Evidence of undertaking and completing at least one audit project.
- Able to appraise scientific publications and use library databases
Desirable
- Experience of clinical research.
