We are looking for 2 enthusiastic doctors at FY1 level to join the General Surgery team at Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job

These posts offer excellent opportunity for doctors wishing to enhance their CVs and gain experience in General Surgery and Urology. The post holder will participate in the on call rota 1:10 weeks and weekends. They will be ward based during the normal working day and expected to deliver the daily medical care of all the patients on their ward. Whilst in the department the F1 will be involved with the generic clerking of patients being admitted and the ongoing care of the patients in the unit.

It comprises two Acute Hospitals: Epsom General Hospital and St Helier Hospital; Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; Elective Orthopaedic Hospital (EOC) and a Private Patient Unit. The post holder will be responsible for:

  • Day to day management of surgical inpatients.
  • Manage time and clinical priorities effectively
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues
  • Participation in the on call rota and to provide cover in exceptional circumstances for colleagues absence.
  • Assessment, care and treatment of patients presenting to the specialty and referred to the speciality.
  • Participation in relevant audit and quality assurance processes.
  • Abide by the Clinical & Corporate Governance policies of the Trust.
  • To make sure that the guidance from the General Medical Council on Good Medical Practice is at the centre of your clinical practice.
  • Keep clinical knowledge up to date by continuous medical education in the best interest of the patient.
  • Although a timetable will be provided, you will be expected to be flexible, in the interests of patient care and to meet the needs of the department as decided by the general manager and coordinating surgeon manner at all time
