Staff Nurse Band 5 - Fulltime 37.5 hours per week

The Surgical Ambulatory Care Unit (SACU) at St Helier Hospital is looking to recruit a motivated surgical Band 5 Registered Staff Nurse with sound knowledge and evidenced based practice to join our team.

The SACU is a busy but friendly assessment unit for adult urology and general surgical patients who present via GP referrals, transfers from the Emergency Department and clinic referrals, as well as a nurse led dressing clinic for complex surgical wounds.

The SACU is a small, but friendly and enthusiastic team, with a good work ethic, that is proven in our friends and family feedback. The surgical team comprises of Registered Nurses, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Surgical Clinicians and Health Care Assistants.

The successful candidate would be expected to liaise closely with all surgical teams within SACU and the clinical site team, to ensure a smooth pathway through the hospital.

The clinic is open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, and consists of 8 bed spaces/chairs together with clinical treatment areas, so shifts include long days, bank holidays and weekends.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the practitioner are to:

  • Work closely with the Advanced Nurse Practitioner, and the rest of the friendly team in the SACU, reporting to the Clinical Matron when required
  • Document patient information, administrating medication and planned surgery when required
  • Cannulate and have essential phlebotomy skills
  • Administer intravenous medication when required
  • Attend patients who present daily for wound dressings
  • Attending patients for minor trauma and general surgery on the day
  • Admit and discharge patients, when needed, to the relevant services or home
  • Provide care for ambulant patients needing treatment or patients referred from the ED and other disciplinary team(s)
  • Liaisewith the different speciality Doctors and Senior Nurses on patient condition
  • Supervisor students and Healthcare Assistants
