Job summary

We are currently looking to recruit a 8PA Substantive Consultant Paediatrician at Epsom General Hospital, Epsom, Surrey, to help deliver our service in the north of Surrey.

The post has been converted from a locum contract to a substantive post to fulfil service requirements. The post will be based at Epsom General Hospital but the post holder may be required to work at other sites as required. Epsom Hospital has an integrated paediatric service with acute and community paediatrics on the same site.

The successful applicant will take part in the acute paediatric service, including consultant of the week attending on the wards, and taking part in the on-call rota. The post holder will do general paediatric clinics. They will also support the neurodevelopmental work of the department; whilst experience in this area is desirable but not essential, a commitment to developing in this area is needed.

The successful applicant will play a crucial role in ensuring the team continues to deliver a high quality paediatric service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will join a team of 20 Paediatric Consultants and 1 Associate Specialist. We are working towards a 9 person paediatric rotas covering ED, the inpatient ward, the Day Case ward and SCBU, in addition to Clinical Nurse Specialists for Epilepsy, Asthma, Allergy, Oncology and Diabetes

Epsom Hospital has 9 middle and 9 junior grade trainees as part of the General Paediatric and SCBU rota. One of the middle grade doctors is a trainee within the community paediatric team.

Routine educational activities include weekly junior doctor teaching programme in addition to Quality meetings, Child Protection Peer review and Mortality & Morbidity meetings which run as part of the monthly programme. There will be opportunities for teaching and training.

Clinical Duties:
  1.   • supporting the neurodevelopmental work of the department including medical advice for EHCP referrals and monitoring of ADHD medication
Teaching, Training, and Research:
  1. As an organisation we are committed to develop our staff and services. We work on improving services in a collaborative manner with the local authorities, in ways that best suit the needs of our patients.
  2. There will be ample opportunities to participate in departmental teaching and supporting the development of middle grade trainees. Participation in Peer Review, service improvement and other clinical governance work is encouraged.
  3. The post-holder will have access to training opportunities and support as part of their appraisal, re-validation and development plan.
  4. Audit and research are encouraged and facilitated through the Audit and the R&D departments which are well established.
Teaching
  1. We are an active teaching centre with regular attachments of students from St Georges Hospital Medical School and international students. We are responsible for the post-graduate training of Specialist Trainees in Paediatrics at all levels. Additionally, FY2, and GP trainees rotate through the department.
Management & Governance
  1. To be responsible for the management, appraisal and discipline of junior doctors who are attached to you, after taking appropriate advice.
  2. To provide advice, as required to the Executive and Trust board, General Practitioners and other interested parties, on the provision of planning of clinical services locally, regionally and nationally in keeping with confidentiality agreements relating to Trust business.
  3. To co-operate in the present framework agreement of management arrangements.
  4. To fully participate in Clinical Governance arrangements across the Trust including participation in clinical audit, research (where appropriate), pursuing an agreed agenda with colleagues and the Trust Board and fully co-operating in implementing the results in order to achieve best practice.
  5. To participate, on at least an annual basis in consultant appraisal and job planning reviews in line with revalidation requirements
