Job summary

The post-holder will ensure that high quality nursing care is delivered to the patient and to work as part of a cohesive multidisciplinary team.

The expectations within this job description will be achieved through hands-on clinical practice, education and training and research.

The post of a qualified nurse is characterised by five principle role functions:

Job responsibilities

1.0 Clinical Practice

The post-holder will ensure that in all areas of practice they adhere to all current NMC guidance,

1.1 Deliver and maintain agreed standards of nursing care with other members of the multidisciplinary team.

1.2 Ensure that nursing care is patient focused and that patient dignity and privacy are maintained at all times.

1.3 Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and colleagues and that equal opportunities are practised.

1.4 Take an active role in maintaining effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives.

1.5 Maintain up-to-date accurate nursing records, ensuring that confidentiality is maintained at all times.

1.6 Take responsibility for a group of patients and deliver hands on care within own level of competence.

1.7 Work with nursing and other healthcare professions, patients and their relatives/carers to assist in the timely discharge from the clinical area through appropriate discharge planning in conjunction with the Discharge Co-ordinators.

1.8 Use reflective practice as a method of ensuring that appropriate effective nursing care is delivered to each patient.

1.9 Safely administer prescribed medications and to monitor their effects.

1.10 Ensure competency and safe maintenance of all medical devices within the sphere of responsibility.

2.0 Professional Leadership and Management

2.1 Supervise and support unregistered members of staff and all new members of the team.

2.2 Report all serious untoward clinical incidents in the appropriate manner to the Ward Sister or the senior nurse on duty completing necessary documentation to level of responsibility.

2.3 Attend and participate in all types of ward/departmental meetings as required including being the patient’s representative at multi disciplinary meetings.

2.4 Support the senior sister in managing the resources required in the provision of care, with an awareness of the financial implications of all actions.

2.5 To develop an understanding of Clinical Governance/Risk Management.

2.6 Ensure confidentiality at all times.

2.7 Develop ability to troubleshoot everyday problems and report actions to sister.

2.8 Assist untrained staff with all clerical and housekeeping duties including:

  • use of Inpatient and clinical management systems
  • Check results and file appropriately after review by doctor where appropriate
  • Patient notes management.

2.9 Order supplies and stores to ensure the activity of the ward / unit can be carried out effectively and efficiently.

3.0 Education, Training and Development

3.1 Maintain own mandatory training requirements.

3.2 Assist the staff in creating a positive learning environment for all staff that is conducive for learning.

3.3 In accordance with the NMC Scope of Professional Practice continue to develop and expand your role to embrace generic and specialty specific skills.

3.4 Continue with own professional and personal development as agreed in KSF review.

3.5 Take every opportunity to develop skills and competence to carry out the role effectively and efficiently.

3.6 Be aware of own limitations and the need for continuing education and personal development. Communicate these needs to the ward sister or mentor as they arise.

3.6 Participate in Student Nurse Education and assessment in accordance with the university requirements.

3.7 Use all opportunities to advocate Health Promotion and participate in patient education to promote caring for themselves at home.
