Avon and Wiltshire Partnership (AWP) are looking for an exceptional person to deliver physical activity coordination for people with a learning disability and autistic people in our specialist acute inpatient mental health service. The successful candidate will work under close supervision from the service lead physiotherapist to support our vision for excellent care.

AWP are working with SW NHSE to provide a new inpatient facility as part of the transformation of end-to-end pathways in the region. We aim to be a centre of excellence. The services are being designed and developed with clinicians and people with lived experience. We expect to open in 2026.

Main duties of the job

To be an exercise specialist, with diverse responsibilities, and key professional in improving and promoting the physical health and wellbeing of those with mental health conditions, learning disability and/or autism, under the care of AWP Kingfisher Inpatient Services.

To assess pre-exercise readiness and design, deliver, monitor, adapt and tailor safe exercise programmes to individual service users.

To work as a member of the multi-professional team to provide physical activity, exercise and health promotion within a hospital and community environment to those with complex physical, psychological and mental health needs, learning disability and/or autism.

To actively educate, facilitate and motivate service users with a learning disability and/or autism and a wide-ranging mental health problem to adopt regular physical activity and an active lifestyle, employing appropriate motivational strategies to achieve this as well as educating staff and service users about the benefits of physical activity on health and wellbeing.

To provide bespoke health and fitness advice and training to adult inpatients with a range of mental health conditions, learning disabilities and/or autism, using onsite fitness facilities, outdoor areas and suitable opportunities in the community. Service users remain the responsibility of an appropriate registered clinician.
