Job summary

The Nursing and Quality Directorate is looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic individual to support the Practice Education Facilitator functions for the trust. This is a great opportunity for someone to build on their significant clinical experience to hone their skills and knowledge as a Practice Education Facilitator (PEF).

You will build and maintain supportive relationships with our Operational colleagues, in order to support Practice Assessors, Practice Supervisors and clinical placement providers to deliver the very best learning opportunities for our future nurses. This includes the implementation and embedding of the NMC's standards. With support and guidance from the Lead PEF, your role will be busy, diverse and varied, and will include delivering Practice Assessor/Supervisor updates, placement audits, liaising with our key academic partners and supporting our student nurses to excel in their clinical placements with AWP.

You will work with PEF colleagues to gain a strong understanding of this complex role, across both BNSSG and BSW divisions. Due to the Trust-wide remit of this role, access to your own transport is essential

Main duties of the job

This role is an integral part of AWPs Nursing Careers and Professional Standards Team, and focusses on improving the experience, quality and diversity of nurse education across AWP. With the support and direction of Senior Practice Education Facilitators, the post holder will:

  • Assess the quality of potential clinical placements, and support the development of new or expanded placements within AWP and its partner organisations
  • Model, articulate and promote good practice around the NMC Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment (SSSA)
  • Maximise placement capacity for pre-registration student nurses and other trainee roles allied to nursing.
  • Support the creation, development and evaluation of viable clinical practice placements, in both nursing and non-nursing settings, within the local health and social care network, under the indirect supervision of AWP's Practice Education Team (NCPS)
  • Support the development of newer roles aligned to nursing, such the Nursing Associate.

  • Advise staff and mentors on best practice in the clinical setting to the improve the service user experience
  • Influence and inform the development of effective and high quality learning opportunities, acting as a visible resource to the team
  • Implement agreed action to maximise the required placement capacity in all clinical teams both within and outside of the Trust (in both nursing and non-nursing settings)
  • Develop strong links with key mentors to support them within the placement areas
  • Support the development of mentors and assessors including the delivery of mentor updates, workshops, conferences and development meetings
  • Enhance and maintain working partnership relationships with Approved Education Institutions (AEIs) and other Regional Education Co-ordinators
  • Provide support mechanisms for mentors in addressing individual student issues, including poor performance
  • Represent the Trust in operational meetings with AEIs to ensure that issues of concern about practice and performance are fully addressed. This will include addressing situations where students have raised concerns about placements.
  • Work with the AWP Education Team to ensure a live register of mentors is available and updated, and ensure systems are in place in the organisation to maintain this
  • Facilitate the annual audits of practice environments with mentors/key mentors and ensure that improvements identified through the process are embedded and maintained
  • Challenge poor performance among mentors and learners, identifying required improvements and ensuring these are followed up. Advise managers on actions taken.
  • Work with aligned AEI practice facing colleagues to support effective learning in practice
  • Participate in and support student recruitment initiatives and induction events
  • Act as an educational resource with support from AEI staff
  • Work in partnership with AEIs and clinical care teams to expand placement capacity into new areas (which may or may not contain registered nurses)
  • Support the development of improved practice education within AWP and AEIs through contributing to local and national initiatives
  • Undertake assessments of nurses and students competencies
  • Remain competent in the clinical skills as identified in the training matrix including Physical Emergency Response Training, Flu Vaccine administration, medicines management etc
