These posts are ideal for those who wish to build on their existing research management experience and contribute to the development of evidence-based patient care.

You'll get to work with researchers from across the whole spectrum of research, from those who are just starting out through to large successful, research teams; providing tailored support and expertise.
You'll be based in the Research and Development (R&D) Office at Southmead Hospital, with the option of hybrid working. Within R&D, the posts will sit in the Research Development and Grants Team, who manage a large and diverse portfolio of research grants, both internally and externally funded (>£50m). The team are forward thinking, always striving to engage new staff and clinical areas in research, make research accessible to all, develop the highest quality research grants, employ continuous improvement to our practice and processes, and improve outcomes for patients across the NHS through our research.
Please note that these are fixed term posts in line with current research funding available and we cannot guarantee extension beyond this time.
Main duties of the job
We are seeking to appoint two roles into the team, both will cover the general duties and responsibilities of the Research Grants Officer roles, including research development (pre-award), and research grant management (post-award):
In these vital roles, you will:
manage a portfolio of research grants from submission to funding bodies through to set-up, delivery and close-out, often working to tight deadlines, and in close liaison with external Partners including Universities, Charities, Industry, as well as a diverse range of funders.
be the first point of contact at the beginning of the research process. Your research knowledge and project management skills will ensure a well-informed, coordinated support mechanism, through to the submission of grant applications.
be responsible for the day-day management of awarded grants, overseeing progress and expenditure against budget and supporting the dissemination of project results/impact.
work closely with our Sponsor, Contracts and Finance teams throughout the lifecycle of the grants in your portfolio to ensure all safety, regulatory, contractual and financial aspects are managed appropriately.

Research Support:
To advise researchers in the development of their research proposals following agreed principles of good practice. This will include either directly undertaking or facilitating support via the Research Support Service, Clinical Trials Units or other academic expertise where appropriate:
Provide advice on developing research ideas, advice on ensuring there is a sufficient gap in current knowledge and assistance in defining the research question
Guiding the researcher through study design options
Assist Trial Managers / research leads in constructing recruitment and event schedules to ensure that the project is feasible
Coordinate meetings to discuss the grant application and study progress as required
Advise on sources of funding and assisting with the preparation of an external grant application or a case for internal funding or facilitating support via the RSS of CTUs as appropriate.
Monitor the set-up and delivery of active SHC Research Fund projects, in liaison with lead investigators and research personnel
Ensure research grant reports are submitted and reviewed in a timely manner
Ensure the SHC Research Fund is appropriately referenced in publications and dissemination materials
Capture learning from successful grant applications and best practice from aspects of the ethical approval process, to feed into research skills training programmes
Responsible for the costing of research grants to the SHC Research Fund (up to £20k per grant) and other funders (up to £250k per grant) in line with funder rules, using R&I approved costing templates. Liaising with partner organisations (NHS Trusts, HEIs) to obtain and review costs, checking for accuracy and eligibility of costs.
Project Management:
To provide project management expertise in the grant application stage and ongoing management of projects, including Southmead Hospital Charity Research Fund grants:
Liaising closely with the lead investigators on all aspects of project management at all stages of the study to ensure an appropriate project plan is established
Liaising with the R&I Office sponsorship and facilitation teams to ensure appropriate regulatory and governance reviews are carried out within the project plan
Monitoring progress of research grants against key milestones, at appropriate intervals Produce study progress and/or finance reports for the Research Development and Grants Team and the funding organisations, where appropriate
Organise a project team when needed, for example, identifying suitable co-applicants and accessing academic input from the Research Support Unit
Organising meetings of the Project Management Teams and following up on agreed actions
Ensure project management is costed into grant applications where appropriate
Day-to-day administration of research grant income and expenditure for individual projects, against budget; liaising with finance to ensure cost centre set-up, monitoring expenditure and income against individual costs centres, reconciliation of statements against cost centres, preparing and submitting Expenditure Requests (ER) to the Southmead Hospital Charity finance team, as needed.
