We are excited to open recruitment for trainee Emergency Medicine Advanced Clinical Practitioner(s) (tEM-ACP) to join our team here at North Bristol NHS Trust's Emergency Department. The successful candidate(s) will be fully supported through an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) Emergency Medicine Advanced Clinical Practitioner credentialing pathway, and professional advanced life support and trauma courses.
The level 1 Emergency Department (ED) holds regional Major Trauma Centre status located in the tertiary centre for Neurosurgery, Neurology, Nephrology, Vascular Surgery, Interventional Radiology, Hyper Acute Stroke service, Burns and Plastic Surgery, whilst also providing district general services to adult patients from Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.
The ED is a leading provider of trauma care in the UK and has a strong record in research publication with the aim of advancing emergency care both nationally and internationally. It has also recently been the setting of the soon to be aired Emergency 24/7 series on BBC One.
Initial trainee renumeration at Agenda for Change Band 7 through to potential post credential earnings inline with Band 8b. We are a 24-hour service and as such the post(s) necessitate some unsocial working. We currently operate on an annualised hours system to support and maximise wellbeing and a sustainable work life balance.
Main duties of the job
This role will involve training towards autonomous, independent clinical practice. With a background of nursing, paramedic or physiotherapy, the post holder will complete training to practice as an autonomous Advanced Clinical Practitioner, working at entrustment level 3 with a clear and concise portfolio to demonstrate the evidence required by Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) ACP curriculum. This will incorporate the progressive development of history taking, clinical examination, clinical investigations and interpretation and subsequently the diagnosis and management planning of the patient specific to the clinical specialty of Emergency Medicine. The successful applicant will be supported to complete an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice or equivalent as stipulated by the RCEM ACP Curriculum.
The post holder will act as a senior clinician within the Emergency Zone, provide senior cover and be identifiable, highly visible and accessible to patients, carers and staff for assistance advice and support

Clinical Deliver and participate in high standards of clinical care delivered to patients in the Emergency Department Ensure all aspects of practice are undertaken with obtained informed consent where applicable, in accordance with local policy, professional body guidance and law. Be able to undertake advanced and comprehensive assessment based on a body of specialist knowledge. Provide supervision and direction to junior members of the clinical and nursing teams. Whilst working within the professional boundaries of a trainee EM-ACP, assess, examine, investigate, diagnose and treat patients resulting in the safe management, which may consist of further management, referral to another specialty or discharge. Contribute and assist in safe and efficient patient flow and become involved in potential areas of improvement within this area. Be directly involved in patient experience quality assessment and implementation of improvement strategies. Critically assess patient care and plans and address any issues, which may result in substandard care. Be familiar and implement trust and national policy, guidelines and recommendations to facilitate a standardised approach. Ensure accurate and legible documentation and records are maintained in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018. Practice in accordance with specific professional body codes of professional standards. Maintain infection control standards.
Education and Training Be committed to personal development and training. Be willing to provide education and teaching locally at both departmental and trust level for the further development of the local team. Completion of Non-Medical Prescribing. Be supportive for the bespoke, sporadic educational needs on the shop floor for junior medical and nursing colleagues in areas where you may have more experience, knowledge and/or skills. Be willing to attend local educational episodes as part of recognised non-clinical time.
Audit and Research Develop skills and knowledge around research and implementing evidence-based practice into the clinical area. Be actively involved in department, royal college and national audits and understand the audit cycle. Understand change and implementation strategies to integrate findings from research and audit into clinical practice. Be actively involved and compliant in appropriate research studies being undertaken within the clinical setting. Undertake opportunities to attend/present at conferences and publish to share best clinical practice from within advanced clinical practice.
Working Conditions / EffortThe individual should expect to: Work shifts spanning the 24 hour period. Frequently exert moderate physical effort when moving and handling patients and equipment, occurring several times during a shift. Frequently change from one task to another (e.g. in the event of deteriorating patient, emergency, absconded patient) due to the unpredictable nature of the workload. Frequently maintain concentration on patient assessment/monitoring and report reading/writing. Support patients, relatives and carers following the receipt of bad news. Be involved in difficult discussions with patients around complaints and staff regarding performance/disciplinary matters. Be exposed to body fluids and foul linen. Be occasionally exposed to violent/aggressive individuals. Be required to use VDU for short periods several times a shift (e.g. laboratory results, report writing etc.)
