Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Qualified Mammographer or Radiographer wishing to train as a Mammographer, to join our multi-professional teams!

The vacancy will be based at Avon Breast Screening Unit at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, the Central Health Clinic at Tower Hill, as well as 3 Mobile Screening Units throughout the catchment area. There is also the expectation that staff occasionally rotate through Weston General Hospital mammography suite to assist with symptomatic services.

We are a friendly team committed to providing a first class service to the women of Bristol, Bath and Somerset at both static and mobile units. Additionally we provide cover for the Symptomatic clinics at both Southmead Hospital and Weston General Hospital. The department supports skill mix and we employ Assistant Practitioners and Radiographers in role extension. The department is committed to personal and professional development with everyone supported in CPD.

In addition to holding the Diploma of the College of Radiographers or relevant Radiography Degree, you must hold a UK-recognised Postgraduate Award in Mammography or Certificate of Competence in Mammography from the College of Radiographers or be willing to work towards one. This qualification typically takes around 1 year to complete.

Note: It is ESSENTIAL that you have a car and a UK Driving licence as working in remote sites on mobile trailers is a requirement of the post holder.

Main duties of the job

The primary duty of this post is to undertake mammography screening and assessment to a high standard at Avon Breast Screening Unit, the BBCC, and on three mobile Breast Screening Units according to NHSBSP guidelines.

The post-holder will be a member of the multidisciplinary team based at the Avon Breast Screening Unit; undertaking mammography examinations related to the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and rotates to the symptomatic imaging units based at Southmead Hospital and Weston General Hospital taking referrals from Outpatient clinics.

The ability to work in a multi-professional team is essential, as is a commitment to the provision of a high quality service. You will be rotated through all aspects of breast care work, including screening, assessments, stereotactic biopsies, mobile units and symptomatic clinics. There are also additional admin duties which are to be completed besides clinical work.

To liaise with the Superintendent Radiographer to ensure that staffing levels of the Symptomatic Unit are maintained, informing Radiologists, Radiographers, the breast co-ordinator and surgical secretaries of problems if necessary.

To perform mammography with precision and speed in the Symptomatic and Screening clinics, at the Breast Care Centre, Tower Hill Clinic, Weston General Hospital and on the mobile units as allocated.

To promote the maintenance of high technical standards with other radiographic staff and perform self-audit (PGMI).

When qualified, provide professional support to more junior radiographers and where necessary provide mentor support.

To transport Clinic documentation to the mobile units in accordance with NHSBSP PIAG Section 60 policies.

To support agitated and anxious clients and family members prior to, during and following examination.

To assist with assessment mammography and interventional radiography including x-ray and ultrasound guided localisation in the Symptomatic Unit and at the Centre including core biopsies and mammotome biopsies, handling specimens when necessary.

To ensure client and patient examination details are entered correctly onto the PACS. CRIS and the NBSS computer system.

To assist clinicians during biopsy procedures using basic nursing techniques as required.

To foster and maintain a good working atmosphere in this multidisciplinary service.

To audit own workload outcomes ensuring National (NHSBSP) targets are met.

To participate in clinical trials within the department.

To actively participate in the daily Q.A. programme both in the Symptomatic Unit and in the Screening Unit recording results both on paper and PC, and follow such quality measures as are determined.

To report, without delay, any equipment malfunction or image quality deterioration or failure to the Superintendent/Deputy radiographer or in their absence to the QA radiographer liaising with MEMO/ Manufacturers/ Physics as necessary.

To ensure personally or by direct supervision the x - ray and ultrasound equipment is prepared and cleaned to a standard appropriate for the examination of clients.

To ensure correct procedure is followed during prolonged equipment failure in the Symptomatic clinic.

To observe the IRM(E)R Regulations, Radiation Local Rules and Procedures.

To participate in the production and implementation of departmental protocols.

To ensure correct procedures are followed during PAC and /or CRIS outage.

To participate in the Health Education and Promotion programme of the service.

To participate in CPD.

To undertake such duties as are delegated by the Superintendent/Deputy Radiographer, and maintain agreed standards in their absence.

To have an Individual Development and Performance Review (Appraisal) with the Superintendent Radiographer/ Deputy at regular intervals, at least annually.
