Job summary
Our Cytology Department are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic Senior Biomedical Scientist to join their team!
This role entails being a team leader in a big department. Daily duties will include screening and checking cytology slides, reporting screening programme results and preparing diagnostic samples. There will also be staff management roles such a sick leave management and training. The role has a big part in the quality management system in the department.

Main duties of the job
- Function as cytology 'checker' to assess suspicious and abnormal cervical smears, along with more difficult cases and, as required screen slides
- Participate in the supervision, training and development of staff in the department
- With the Lead BMS and other senior staff, contribute to the development of the services provided to meet the users requirements
- To manage, lead and take responsibility for the day to day functioning of an agreed designated area within the Cytology service. Those areas will include,- Laboratory training officer- Quality lead- Health and safety lead- IM&T lead- Failsafe officer- Diagnostic Cytology (Non-Gynae).

Staff
- Be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of staff within their section
- Participate in staff appraisal / PDP according to Trust policies and procedures. Conduct appraisals of staff within their section.
- With senior staff in Cytology and Laboratory Manager, participate in the recruitment of staff
- Organise and deliver the induction, and training of Biomedical Scientists, trainees and Medical Laboratory Assistants within the section
- Participate in competency assessment of Biomedical Scientists, trainees and Medical Laboratory Assistants within the section.
- Assist in the monitoring and performance management of Biomedical Scientists, trainees and Medical Laboratory assistants as appropriate
Laboratory
- Function as supervisor and trouble-shooter for Cervical Cytology, HPV testing or Non-gynae Cytology
- Be responsible for the day-to-day organisation and management of the work and staff in a section of the department
- With other senior laboratory staff, act as team leader to assess suspicious and abnormal cervical smears, along with more difficult cases. Be responsible for passing those assessed as abnormal to Consultant grade staff and issuing reports on those assessed as negative
- Interpret routine and specialist diagnostic test results. Technically validate routine and specialist test results. Report specialist tests ie crystal analysis
- Contribute to discussions of workflow patterns and methodology
- To be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and cleanliness of laboratory equipment.
- Participate in quality assurance procedures including internal and external quality control
- To be responsible for records and investigations related to the failsafe of patient follow up.
- Participate in the screening of non-gynaecological cases
- Participate as required and as appropriate in all technical aspects of Cytology including, Primary Cervical Screening and rapid review Specimen reception, preparation HPV testing and staining
- Provide appropriate cover for other BMSs and more senior BMS staff as required
- Be responsible for resource management within their section, in particular,(a) ensuring adequate supplies of equipment, materials and reagents(b) initiating the requisitioning of supplies(c) prioritising work(d) troubleshooting problems that occur
- Participate in evaluation and validation of new methods and equipment
- Ensure that all risk management processes including reporting of adverse incidents, within section comply with departmental and Trust policies
- Participate in audit.
- Participate in research and in the development and introduction of new techniques and systems of work
- Be involved in the investigation and response to complaints escalating to the Lead BMS as appropriate.
- Work according to laboratory procedures developed for use in the department. Ensure procedures in use within their area remain contemporary and relevant. Assist in the development and review of those procedures as required.
- Work according to the regulations and codes of practice governing aspects of Health and Safety relevant to the department
