Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Support Manager in the Trauma and Orthopaedics department within the NMSK Division.

This role is key in ensuring the efficient and effective management of inpatient services within the Trauma and Orthopaedics department. Working closely with consultants, administrative teams, and service managers, you will ensure that patient pathways are well coordinated, elective and urgent admissions are scheduled effectively, and theatre lists are utilised efficiently. You will also manage performance data, identify areas for improvement, and support the implementation of service improvement programmes.

This role requires strong leadership and organisational skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. The post-holder will be enthusiastic, proactive, and adaptable, with a keen eye for detail and a problem-solving mindset to identify and implement solutions effectively. Strong analytical skills, the ability to manage competing priorities, and excellent communication skills with both clinical and administrative teams are essential.

Main duties of the job

  • Managing inpatient waiting lists and booking processes to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
  • Managing RTT pathways, ensuring compliance with NHS targets and reducing delays.
  • Theatre scheduling and maximising theatre utilisation to improve service delivery.
  • Collaborative and frequent working with the Outpatient Support Manager to ensure effective utilisation of all service areas, and to provide cross-cover when required.
  • Producing reports and analysing data to track performance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Liaising with consultants, waiting list coordinators, and operational teams to ensure smooth patient pathways.
  • Managing key performance indicators (KPIs) and ensuring service targets are met.
  • Supporting the implementation of service improvements and pathway redesign initiatives, to enhance patient experience and operational efficiency.
  • Contributing to workforce planning, recruitment, and staff development within the department.
  • Ensuring compliance with NHS policies, clinical governance, and health & safety standards.

The duties and responsibilities listed above are not intended to be exhaustive but are set out to indicate the main areas of activity currently expected of any Inpatient Support Manager. The post holder will therefore be expected to adopt a flexible approach when the needs of the service require.
