Job summary

We're looking for an enthusiastic Surgical Care Practitioner/ Physiotherapist to join our Trauma & Orthopaedics Team!

The post-holder will participate in operative procedures and aspects of pre and post operative care of surgical patients, under the direction of the Consultant Surgeon(s).

The post holder will work closely with the medical and other staff to develop the role to its full potential.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide skilled assistance and surgical intervention under the direct or indirect supervision of the Consultant Surgeon
  • By working as a pro-active, effective and efficient member of the multidisciplinary team, to participate in the planning, delivery and evaluation of individualised patient care.
  • To participate in the provision of teaching, assessment and development opportunities for other members of the surgical team.
  • To develop, implement, and deliver the enhanced recovery pathway for patients undergoing arthroplasty within Elective Orthopaedics.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Pre-operative:

To take part in ward rounds prior to surgery, including independently checking consent and performing surgical site marking of patients prior to undergoing surgery.

To be responsible for the setting up of specialist equipment and positioning the patient in theatre

To perform urinary catheterisation for both male and female patients undergoing surgery.

To ensure all equipment necessary for surgery is arranged in advance with theatre.

Clinical - Peri-operative:

To prepare and drape the skin prior to surgery

To act competently in the role of first or second assistant for all types of Orthopaedic surgery

To assist the surgeon and perform invasive procedures where appropriate such as incision, tissue retraction, surgical haemostasis, dislocation/reduction of joints, and drain insertion.

To perform deep and superficial wound closure under the direct or indirect supervision of medical staff.

To handle surgical instruments to perform suturing and knot tying, apply ligatures, suction, and application of wound dressings.

To infiltrate surgical sites, wounds, and joints under medical supervision.

To undertake briefings and debriefings, as part of or on behalf of the surgical team, highlighting any potential problems.

To perform parts of the surgical procedure when necessary, if deemed competent and appropriate by the Orthopaedic surgeon.

Essential

  • Current registration with a professional regulatory body
  • BSc or equivalent in healthcare (Physiotherapist, RGN or ODP)
  • Completed the RCS MSc/PgDip in Surgical Care Practice in Trauma and Orthopaedics
  • Completion of the Surgical Practice and Assistance Training (SPAT) course

Work Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a Trauma/ Orthopaedic setting
  • Experience of working in healthcare and the challenges this may present
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate physiotherapy experience leading to autonomous practice on the wards

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Essential

  • Experience of surgical assisting within an orthopaedic theatre setting
  • Willing to seek help from senior colleagues as appropriate
  • Able to produce clear and concise notes
