Job summary

Are you an enthusiastic, caring experienced Healthcare Support Worker?An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our friendly and supportive team in Haematology/ Chemotherapy Suite! The suite is situated within the Brunel Building at Southmead Hospital.

Chemotherapy suite is open 0800-1800 Monday to Friday and provides treatments for a patients with blood cancer. Listed are some examples of the intravenous therapies and treatments we deliver:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Biologics
  • Bisphosphonates
  • Blood transfusions
  • Bone marrow biopsies

The successful candidate will:

  • Have Haematology and Chemotherapy Clinic experience
  • Currently be working at the Senior Healthcare Support Worker level
  • Meet the education and training requirements for this role

Please note, this role does not currently meet the salary requirement for certificate of sponsorship. From the 9th April 2025, the minimum salary required for a Skilled Worker visa became £25,000 per year. While this role may be offered at a higher point on the pay scale depending on relevant NHS experience, most new starters are appointed at the bottom of the band, which does not meet the new salary threshold.

Main duties of the job

A Senior Healthcare Support Worker (SHCSW) is a core member of the team delivering direct care to patients and supporting registered practitioners to deliver high quality, compassionate health care to people in accordance with assessed needs and a care plan.

You will carry out a range of clinical and non-clinical healthcare, or therapeutic tasks, under the direct or indirect supervision of the registered healthcare practitioner, in accordance with the Trust values.

There will be opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills, specific to your needs. Training will be provided to ensure you have the required core skills and skills set specific to your area of work.

You would be expected to:

  • Support the Registered Nurses by helping to start patients' treatments including recording observations on eobs and weighing patients.
  • Place and remove cannulas at the end of treatment. You will assist with patients having bone marrow biopsies and any documentation required.
  • Taking blood samples
  • Assist the doctor with patients having bone marrow biopsies
  • Provide refreshments for patients.
  • Admin support with admitting and discharging patients.
