Job summary
The South West Plexus Team (SWePT) is a new UK regional specialist centre for the treatment of brachial plexus injuries and complex peripheral nerve injuries. Some patients are seen and treated as emergencies as a result of acute trauma, and others are referred because of chronic problems (e.g. Nerve compressions including TOS) sometimes these can be associated with previous injury. The unit also deals with nerve tumours in the upper and lower limbs. The SWePT team comprises of an interdisciplinary team of Surgeons, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and a CNS. Our vision is to work together to provide evidence based, collaborative and compassionate care within a supportive team environment.
Main duties of the job
The Highly Specialist Occupational Therapist/Hand Therapist working in SWePT will be expected to deliver an enhanced level of practice and clinical leadership within the patients' pathway. They will work with the wider MDT to help to deliver care at a regional level (guiding local services). In addition, they will be expected to actively participate in and lead team service evaluations audits and have many opportunities for research.

The Highly Specialist Occupational Therapist in Brachial Plexus Injury will be expected to deliver an enhanced level of practice and clinical leadership within the patient's pathway.
- The post holder oversees the day-to-day running of the SWePT team within the Multidisciplinary (MDT) Brachial Plexus outpatient clinics and is line managed by the Consultant Physiotherapist in Brachial Plexus Injury.
- They undertake the role of a clinical leader to plan, co-ordinate, deliver and evaluate the Occupational and Hand Therapy service into these areas.
- They will support the MDT in the delivery of the services including management of referrals, participation in multi-disciplinary team clinics, and making onwards referrals when required.
- Work as an autonomous, highly skilled clinician, to provide a specialised service of Occupational Therapy/Hand Therapy including assessment, treatment, advice, counselling and education for patients, carers/families and staff within the Brachial Plexus Injury, Thoracic Outlet and Peripheral Nerve Injury outpatient clinics.
- As the Occupational Therapy/Hand Therapy Lead within the MDT, provide specialist advice to other professionals on holistic management strategies and work closely with the Consultants and MDT to formulate appropriate management plans for patients
- Provide appropriate training and education to other Health care professionals, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, hand therapists and students. To be an expert resource within the SWePT service for this specialist patient group.
- To work with and deputise for the Consultant Physiotherapist as appropriate.

- HCPC registered Occupational Therapist
- Evidence of post graduate training & education in neuro-musculoskeletal rehabilitation, neuro-disability, upper limb disorders, hand therapy or peripheral nerve injury (including hand therapy or thoracic outlet syndrome).
Desirable
- Member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists and/or relevant Clinical Interest Groups (e.g. British Association of Hand Therapists).
- Completed or working towards MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice.
