Senior Enhanced Practitioner

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, enthusiastic and motivated Senior Enhanced Practitioner to join the Neurosurgical Practitioner team.

The post holder will act as a senior healthcare professional within the Neurosurgery Oncology domain and provide support to the Enhanced Practitioner workforce in the Neurosurgery department, and be identifiable, highly visible, and accessible to patients, carers and staff for assistance, advice and support.

Hold post-registration qualification/CPD- PACR, PADRP and non-medical prescribing as a minimum for the area of practice. This is recommended to be the Enhanced Clinical Practitioner Level 6 qualification.

Main duties of the job

Undertake pre-assessment for elective and urgent surgical patients within this pathway, and the caseload is proportionate.

Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and processes of child and adult protection legislation to ensure the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.

Request and undertake multidisciplinary/agency health, frailty services and social services assessments.

Liaise with Neuro-oncology Consultants, resident doctors, clinical specialist nurses, oncology team and waiting list co-ordinators regularly to enable an individualised and compassionate service for patients.

With the senior surgical team, manage the elective patient pathway, such as the enhanced recovery programme for oncology patients, and support inpatient flow.

Work towards autonomy to discharge patients from identified clinical areas, dependent on patient need at the time of review. This includes the autonomy to refer to and work in partnership with all appropriate health and social care professional groups and agencies.

Integral role in Neuro-oncology MDT, which will serve as an educational route and enhance care provision for patient groups.

To provide education and support to patients, relatives/carers, medical and nursing staff.

Main point of contact for all elective pathway patients following their attendance at the Neurosurgical Pre-assessment Clinic (NPAC).

Enhanced level practice describes a level that can only be delivered by registered professionals with statutory registration who have gained additional post-registration education and experiential learning in a relevant subject area. This level can be applied to the full range of registered professional careers. The enhanced level is differentiated from other levels by ones expertise in using specific knowledge and skills in a designated area. This role will manage patient caseloads, providing interventions as part of a defined pathway.

2. Registered professionals working at an enhanced level are expected to be able to manage discrete activities in complex, challenging and changing situations and environments. They should also be confident to seek further guidance when they reach the boundaries of their competence.

3. Utilise the four pillars of practice (Clinical Practice, Education, Research and Leadership) to support the delivery of the Trust objectives through behaviours which demonstrate the Trust Values. Please note that this level is primarily clinically focused and is not underpinned by an MSc in Advanced Practice; however, candidates with an MSc in Advanced Practice are still eligible to work at this level.

4. This role will involve autonomous, independent clinical practice, as well as leadership of the enhanced practitioners working in the department.
