Job summary

The Donor Milk Bank team based at Southmead Hospital are looking for a new Donor Milk Technician who will undertake routine pasteurisation of human breast milk for the Regional Milk Bank, which supplies donor breast milk to the 12 neonatal units of the Southwest region to support the health and wellbeing of premature and sick babies and their families.

The main elements of the role include ensuring pasteurisation is carried out according to the expected quality standards (NICE Guidance), receiving, sorting and storing donor breast milk and keeping appropriate records of milk batches, milk donors, laboratory samples and stock of consumables.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be happy to process human breast milk which involves handling frozen containers of milk and pouring and whisking defrosted milk as part of the pasteurisation process. He/she will be physically able to stand for long periods and move around the Donor Milk Bank while operating machinery, following infection control procedures and completing documentation accurately.

We are a small, friendly team who support each other to provide a Milk Bank service for the whole of the southwest neonatal network region. The work is rewarding and essential for the health and wellbeing of pre-term and sick babies and their families.

  • Evidence of full time education achievements
  • Numeracy and Literacy Level 2 or GCSE grade C and above
  • IT skills, basic Word, Email, keyboard skills, data input
  • Ability and willingness to undertake appropriate training for required milk bank activities

  • Experience of working in a health or social care setting
