Job summary

The successful applicant will join the NBT Neurosurgery and Spine team in a fixed term capacity for a period of 12 months.

The Spine team at NBT is collaborative team consisting of 5 Neurosurgical and 5 Orthopaedic background Spinal surgeons: providing a Regional complex spinal service, treating a wide aspect of all spinal conditions elective and trauma including spinal deformity, and intradural conditions.

The successful applicant will participate in a Spinal on call 1 in 10 weeks based at Southmead Hospital, and at times may be asked to support the Neurosurgical Paediatric colleagues at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

The postholder will be responsible for the management ofcomplex spinal conditions under their care. The successful candidate must liaise with consultant colleagues regarding the continuity of care of when the postholder is absent.

Main duties of the job

Consultant in Spinal Surgery

North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) wishes to appoint a fellowship trained Consultant Spinal surgeon. This post is a full time 10 PA position.

The successful applicant must hold the FRCS (Tr+Orth), or FRCS (Neurosurgery) or equivalent.

They should maintain full registration with the GMC. They must have CCT in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery or Neurosurgery and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at thetime of the appointment.

It is essential for the successful candidate to have at least 2 years of fellowship experience in complex spinal conditions.

The successful candidate will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003. The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.

Desirable qualifications include:

1. Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD orMS).

2. Demonstration of their ability to carry out independently and competently complex spinal upper cervical spine surgery.

3. Training in intradural spinal conditions.

4. Training in spinal dysraphism.

With over 20 surgeons and over 700 members of staff, we provide a complete Neurosurgery and Spines trauma service with over 600 severely injured patients each year as well as an extensive service in Spine Surgery treating a wide range of spinal conditions paediatric and adult .
