Job summary
To have supervisory responsibility for the provision of a safe, cost-effective grounds maintenance service in order to meet current legislative, Health & Safety and Trust / NHS standards and requirements.
A Full, Clean, UK Manual Driving license is essential for this post. Please do not apply if you do not have a UK license to drive a manual vehicle.
Main duties of the job
Relevant Qualification in Horticulture, including land preparation, plant
identification and maintenance. Identification of and treatment of Pests and Diseases. (City and Guilds / NVQ Level 111)
Certificate of competence in the Application of Pesticides using Handheld Equipment - National Proficiency Test Council (NPTC Level 2)
Certificate of competence in Brush cutting operations NPTC level 2 or within18 months.
In depth, demonstrable knowledge of and experience in Grounds and Gardens (including landscape & horticultural) Maintenance and effective supervision, monitoring and delivery of such.
Experience in using email and Microsoft Office suite of programmes, including PDA's
To act independently using ones own initiative and experience.

Ability to prioritise and organise own workload and the work of staff and contractors.
Experience / awareness of requirements of risk assessment and risk management. The Trust requires all Team Leaders to have completed the IOSH Managing Safely course, if not undertaken already, training will be provided.
Evidence of both good interpersonal skills and working harmoniously within a team environment
Practical experience of at least 5 years in grounds and gardens maintenance.
- The post holder will be required to hold a Full driving License to use Trust vehicles and ride on machinery, as and when requested
About us
The post holder will mainly work out of doors and be subject to the relative mercy of the weather. Some maintenance activities occur within buildings or in courtyards and other such areas accessed via a building.
The nature of the work can be physically demanding. There will be a requirement to walk an average of 5-8 km per day.
Duties will include grass cutting using both "walk behind and ride on" mowers, hedge cutting, weeding, digging, collecting leaves and rubbish, sweeping, emptying waste bins, litter picking and taking any waste to the Trust's on-site disposal facility.
Occasional outside-of normal working hours may be requested.
On occasions, conflict, disagreement, or disputes can occur within the department, with contractors or with the "customers". There may be the added frustration due to the failure of other persons or organocations to render a service as some may expect or desire. The post holder will be taking a lead role in the resolution of such disputes or disagreements.
Mental effort: Frequent and prolonged periods of concentration are necessary when operating machinery, for both your own safety and the safety of others. Administratively, concentration will be required when checking time sheets, undertaking risk assessments, producing safe systems of work, method statements and compiling reports and other documentation.

To be responsible for ensuring that the site is kept free from rubbish, litter and debris. To ensure all bins are emptied regularly and all footpaths, road gutters and all entrances are kept free of rubbish and debris.
To ensure sufficient resource is maintained in the light of staff absence, to maintain service delivery, informing the line manager of any difficulties.
To ensure that all maintenance activities are undertaken safely with due regard to others who may be affected by such operations. This includes the creation and periodic review of method statements and risk assessments covering tasks, COSSH and any other situation where a written risk assessment becomes necessary.
To create and review procedures and policies for the operation of plant and machinery and to ensure all pre use and other safety checks are undertaken at the required frequencies.
To ensure all plant and machinery is operated safely; is maintained in a safe condition and that records of maintenance and repair are kept for inspection.
To ensure any training needs are identified and training provided for.
To undertake annual staff appraisals.
To undertake Welcome Back to Work Discussions and manage sickness absence in accordance with the Trust Policy.
To plan, prioritise and allocate resource to ensure all planned and un-planned grounds maintenance tasks are completed in a timely and cost-effective manner, with minimal disruption to the clinical service provision. To report any defects or anomalies promptly to the line manager if matters cannot be dealt with by the post holder.
To give support in the recruitment and retention of staff.
Promoting effective lines of communication throughout the EM and Trust environment and in dealing with incidental enquiries from patient, the public and occupants of buildings as necessary.
Continuously improving both oneself and the team to deliver on the key tasks and objectives identified by the Trust and to attend training events and meetings to acquire the skills and knowledge to the benefit of all.
The post holder must personally follow and ensure that others within the team adhere to relevant Trust Policies (Health and Safety & personnel policies) in addition to ensuring compliance with specific work area policies (Safe systems of work)
