Senior Genetic Technologist - Team Lead - Band 7 - Permanent
Are you an experienced Senior Genetic Technologist who is looking for the next step in your career?
Bristol Genetics Laboratory (BGL) are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated team leader to join our Senior Genetic Technologist team. You will lead our Next-Generation Sequencing service, headed by Senior Genetic Technologists, and be responsible for efficient running of our services including equipment procurement, resource management, service development/improvement and staff supervision and recruitment.
BGL is part of the South West Genomic Laboratory Hub (SW GLH) which delivers centralised genomic testing for patients with cancer and rare disease throughout the South West region. We are a large, well equipped, and friendly lab that values the experience new team members can bring to the role.
You will be an AHCS registered Genetic Technologist (or equivalent) and have a second class honours degree and/or higher degree in a relevant scientific subject alongside extensive experience in a diagnostic Genetics laboratory.
Our laboratory works 08:00 - 18:00 Monday to Saturday and successful candidates will be expected to work 37.5 hours a week full time and participate in our rotas for Saturdays and Bank holidays.

Main duties of the job
As a crucial member of the Senior Technical and Departmental leadership teams you will:
- Undertake technical and scientific duties required to support provision of an effective and high-quality Genetics laboratory service to patients, in accordance with National and professional standards.
- Contribute to the management, supervision and training of staff including planning, allocation and quality checking of work
- Act as technical lead for their area of service with responsibilities for management of technical staff and workload including rotas and absence cover.
- Be responsible for the day to day workflow management and maintenance for their area of service
- Introduce, validate and maintain new technological developments
- Proactively make service improvement suggestions
- Find new ways of working, streamlined pathways increasing through put, reducing costs, and reducing turnaround times.
- Staff are expected to be flexible and to work in any area of the department as required subject to training and service need

The postholder will be responsible for his/her own work and the day-to-day supervision of other technical staff, under the overall direction of senior staff.

Laboratory
To provide and supervise technical support for the laboratory including arranging cover for staff absence.
To perform specialist genetic analyses to the highest possible standards, and to present the results to appropriate scientists for checking, interpretation, and reporting.
To participate in risk management of the department including reporting of adverse incidents.
To organise personal workload and to supervise the work of other technical staff.
To prepare and maintain adequate supplies of reagents and consumables.
To ensure the efficient and safe use of consumables within own working area.
To be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and cleanliness of laboratory equipment.
To ensure smooth running of the techniques within area of responsibility and to use specialist technical skills and expertise in diagnostic laboratory genetics to take appropriate steps and trouble shoot as required to maintain and improve quality.
To participate in quality assurance procedures in accordance with the laboratory quality manual.
To assist in research and development projects as required.
Communication
Communicate with laboratory staff within the department and Pathology at North Bristol Trust and other laboratories as required.
Liaise with scientific staff regarding technical matters appropriateness of tests, results and further tests required.
To be point of contact for company representatives and liaise with other technical sections for the purposes of procurement, resourcing and control of consumables and equipment.
To promote effective team working.
